The 11th Annual Joe Nall Giant Scale Fly-In: RC Heaven and Southern Hospitality in Greenville, South Carolina
By Jerry Smith
Go down Smith Road, through the big iron gates, and you are in RC heaven! (Well, it's true.) The largest International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) event held in the southeastern U.S. took place May 13–16. More than 260 pilots registered with some 350 aircraft. In some places, models were spread out two and three deep along the flight line. (You can imagine what it was like trying to get a frequency pin.)
Event highlights
- Pat Hartness graciously allowed IMAA members on his 400-acre private estate to fly from dawn until dusk.
- The event was sponsored by the Confederate Air Farce, IMAA Chapter 94, who specialize in fun, fellowship, and hospitality.
- According to Pat, the Confederate Air Farce is responsible for making it all take place safely; he just watches it happen. Not quite true: Pat was mowing the runway each morning, almost before it was light, to be sure it was immaculate for the day's flying.
Saturday night is always special at the Joe Nall Fly-In. The famous barbecue had more than 600 lined up, while a bluegrass band picked and sang. All this, along with RC friends in Pat's backyard, made for a very special evening that was hard to beat.
I am purposely cutting the commentary short to allow for more pictures of your models (which, by the way, were gorgeous). See you next year at the 12th Annual Joe Nall Giant Scale Fly-In, which will be held, of course, at Hartness Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
