25th US Free Flight Championships
By John Oldenkamp
The silver anniversary United States Free Flight Championships was held over Labor Day weekend, 1995, at Lost Hills, California. Although attendance was down slightly from previous years, plenty of good flying was done, and the weather was excellent.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the AMA Hall of Fame Award to longtime free-flighter Vic Cunningham Sr. Noted illustrator Bill Wylam was also honored as a new member of the Hall of Fame in ceremonies following the second day of flying.
Notable items
- Indoor flying returned to the schedule this year at the Taft High School gym.
- A crashed model's fuel ignited, causing a brush fire that took some time to control.
- Night flying was held to the strains of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida."
- Herb Robbins scored an upset win in F1A.
- Bob DeShields won the Sweepstakes.
A full rehash will not be attempted here; results have been published in Free Flight and in newsletters before this report could be printed.
Special thanks to Roger and Sam Coleman, and to all the California free flight clubs who worked together to produce an efficient, smoothly run contest.
Herewith, then, a scrapbook look at the 25th USFFC.
