AMA Building Fund: Update VI

Progress on the AMA's new home continues. Soil test borings were made on the site at four positions located where the actual structure will be built. This initial step was necessary to confirm the load capability of the soil where we will build our permanent home. The $1,158 fee for this geotechnical engineering study was paid from money raised by the Building Fund drive.

Those of us close to the Building Project were visibly excited by the soil test, and with good reason. These tests were the first physical work to be done on the property. This small step was significant evidence that this long-held dream of model builders is, indeed, becoming a reality. Most importantly, it is a reality made possible by the donations and contributions of the model builders and friends of the AMA.

At this writing in mid-December, the Building Fund has raised a total of $68,590. The barometer on this page shows the tremendous effect of the donations sent in with membership renewals during the October–November period.

Awards

About the time you are reading this issue, your AMA club should be receiving its club charter renewal package. Included in this package is a sample of a Building Fund Certificate Award. The sample has information on the back side concerning availability and cost. All proceeds generated from the club's use of these certificates go toward the Building Fund.

If your club is considering an event in 1982 where some sort of trophy or award will be presented, consider using these awards. This not only will provide an excellent and distinctive award for your event, but will also help an excellent cause.

Other Contributions

In a project as large as this AMA Building Project, there are many avenues of contribution other than the necessary dollar donations. Of course, there is a requirement for money (in large amounts!) to make this project a reality, but there are many other things that go into a building: brick, steel, wood, and concrete are obvious needs—not to mention carpeting, furnishings such as files, chairs, and desks, electrical items like light fixtures and intercoms, inside and outside landscaping, heating and air-conditioning systems, and display cases/racks.

If you work for (or possibly operate) a company that handles or manufactures an item that can be used in the new building, now is the time to consider possible contributions. AMAers already have indicated donations such as stock certificates, an intercom system, museum items, and even the possibility of a full-size airplane. All of these are tax-deductible to the individuals and companies involved. AMA members also have donated architectural skills, artistic skills, and professional capacity to this project.
