AMA Building: Update XX

Status

AMA Headquarters is in full operation in the new National Center for Aeromodeling. Model Aviation magazine and the Visitors and Conference Centers are also housed in the facility. The first issue of Model Aviation to be finalized in the new offices was the May 1983 issue. AMA's Executive Council held its first meeting in the Conference Center on March 19, 1983.

National Museum

With the business functions of the AMA in place and operating, attention is now focused on the museum. The goal is to have a viable museum operating by the time school starts this fall.

Sound the clarion call! All those who have historical or significant models, engines, radios, documents, photos, or artifacts are urged to contact AMA HQ at once. To have our museum up and ready for visitors by early September, the items for display must be collected very soon. It is an honor to have your contribution on display — and remember that such donations are tax-deductible.

As soon as practical, we will announce a visiting schedule for the museum. Hopefully, some kind of weekend arrangement can be worked out when the displays and interest in them are great enough.

Financial Report

While the accounting books aren't yet closed on the project, enough information has been collected to present a "how goes it" report.

  • Our original estimate for the Building Project was $1,200,000.
  • The actual cost is approximately $1,250,000, including over $65,000 in improvements added to the original plan. For a project of this size, this cost is a very satisfactory outcome.
  • The goal of the 1981–82 Building Fund Drive was to raise $160,000 — the estimated amount necessary to implement the entire project. By meeting this goal, it was felt that our 1984 rent budget would be equal to the mortgage payment on the $940,000 bank loan that had been arranged.
  • We reached our $160,000 goal and went on to raise slightly over $300,000. This meant we didn't have to borrow the full $940,000. Less than $860,000 had to be borrowed, and the present intention is to prepay a portion of that by mid-year.
  • Falling interest rates have helped, as AMA has a variable rate pegged to three-fourths of the prime rate. The prime rate has fallen enough to make AMA's ownership position less costly than the amount which would have been necessary to rent in downtown Washington, D.C.
  • AMA will continue raising money to completely pay off the entire debt. By not having to service the mortgage, we can save about $100,000 a year for each and every year to come. Complete information packages will soon be mailed to AMA officers and AMA Chartered Clubs.

In the meantime, many companies offer matching funds programs to employees making donations. Even if your company is not listed, check with the Personnel, Benefits, or Community Relations Department where you work for appropriate forms or guidelines.
