Goldberg Vital People Awards
The deadline is fast approaching for nominations for the Goldberg Vital People Awards. January 1st of each year is the usual closing date for all nominations for this prestigious recognition; for 1989 the deadline has been extended until April 30, 1989. The first six Goldberg Awards were presented in 1984.
Carl and Beth Goldberg established the awards to recognize the "unsung heroes" whose behind-the-scenes work has contributed greatly to model aviation — newsletter editors, club officers, contest organizers, judges, and others who do the work so the rest of us may benefit.
The Vital People Award includes a cash award and an appropriate plaque. The program is administered by the Academy, and up to six people may be selected annually.
Candidate Recommendations
- Nominations may be submitted by any Open AMA member. Forms are available from AMA Headquarters.
- Nominees must have been AMA members for a minimum of four years and must be living.
- Typical candidates may be unknown at the national or regional level but will have made significant contributions locally. Examples include Nats workers, appointed district officers, contest board members, or anyone who has helped, taught, or built the sport over a period of time.
- An AMA-chartered club may nominate and support one of its members.
- An individual Open member over 21 years of age may make a nomination provided three other Open members support it. Such nominations should be submitted to the appropriate District Vice President for transmission to the National Center.
Eligibility and Exclusions
- People who have already received national recognition are not to be considered.
- AMA employees and elected officers are excluded.
- Magazine columnists, manufacturers, or principals in hobby-related businesses cannot be considered.
- Although the award is intended as a one-time honor, a second-time nomination will be considered by the committee only after five years have elapsed.
