AMA Introduces Dues Incentive for First‑Time Members

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) has introduced a dues incentive program to encourage new members to join. The program applies only to first‑time Open Full Members and does not apply to renewals of current or past members.

  • New members pay the Open Full Member rate of $40 when joining AMA.
  • At the next-year renewal, the member is charged a prorated amount based on join date:
  • First Quarter (January 1–March 31): renew at the full Open Full rate.
  • Second Quarter (April 1–June 30): receive a 25% discount at renewal.
  • Third Quarter (July 1–September 30): receive a 50% discount at renewal.
  • Fourth Quarter (October 1–December 31): receive membership for the remainder of that year plus all of the next year.

The program was adopted by the AMA Executive Council during its April meeting at AMA Headquarters and was recommended by a special Ad Hoc Dues Committee composed of AMA President Don Lowe, Executive Vice President Dave Brown, District 4 Vice President Howard Crispin, Executive Director Vince Mankowski, and Director of Operations Robert Vojslavek.

AMA Unveils Introductory Pilot Program

The AMA Introductory Pilot Program allows chartered clubs to instruct non‑AMA members while providing liability insurance coverage for the non‑member and the club.

Key points:

  • Non‑member modelers who have never been AMA members may receive aeromodeling instruction for a 30‑day period starting with the first flying session.
  • Training must take place at a chartered club field under direct, one‑on‑one supervision of a club‑designated Intro Pilot.
  • The program covers training activities only. Non‑member trainees are not permitted to fly in organized events (sanctioned or otherwise) during the 30‑day period.
  • Each chartered club may designate up to three Intro Pilots.
  • Intro Pilots must be Open members and submit an Introductory Pilot Designation Form signed by a club officer to AMA Headquarters with a $40 fee (in addition to current membership dues). The fee applies per club—Intro Pilots training for more than one club must pay the fee for each club.
  • Neither the club nor the Intro Pilot may charge the non‑member training fees.
  • Coverage under AMA’s liability insurance applies only during the 30‑day instruction period; no other membership benefits apply.
  • Participation is one time only; extensions are not permitted. Prior to the end of the 30‑day period, the non‑member may join AMA to continue liability insurance coverage and receive other membership benefits.
