Club of the Month — Top Gun RC Club (Goldmine, GA)
Our District V Club of the Month for July is the Top Gun RC Club in Goldmine, GA. The club is committed to helping others while having fun. It recently hosted its third annual Cancer Benefit Fly-in at its flying field. Many fliers from across Georgia participated. The club provided free food and drinks for fliers and spectators. Proceeds from the Cancer Benefit went to the American Cancer Society—this year the total was $1,705.
The club also conducts several annual community and youth-focused activities:
- Flying demonstrations for Boy Scouts, with the public invited.
- A mall show where children ages 9 to 15 enter a drawing; the winner receives a model kit, a radio, and free flight lessons.
- "Flying for Tots" events where the landing fee is a new toy.
- Christmas door-to-door fundraising in Hart County; collected funds are donated to the Salvation Army.
Leadership is something of a family affair:
- John Lane — President (6 years)
- Jim Lane — Vice President (6 years)
- Charles Lane — Secretary/Treasurer (6 years)
For the Top Gun RC Club's work encouraging young people to fly and its involvement in community affairs, it is our District V Club of the Month. A framed plaque is being mailed to the president.
Events Attended
I attended the Huntsville, AL Rocket City RC (RCRC) June Fun-Fly at the Trey Wilbourn field. Wayne Gladden and Chuck Facemire served as contest directors.
I also attended the Music City Helicopter Championships in Nashville. Events 431–434 were very well run by contest director Tim Diperi, who had excellent control of the affair.
Modern radio-controlled helicopters are very well engineered—some models cost several thousand dollars. They are highly maneuverable and can be flown inverted, turned, and hovered much like full-scale helicopters.
A fun-fly is exactly that: people gather, enjoy each other's company, and fly when they feel like it.
