Bee Radio Control Flying Club — Spring Fly-in and Pet Food Donation

On Sunday, May 26, 2002, Bee Radio Control Flying Club held its third annual Spring Fly-in at the club field on the closed NAS Chase Field in Beeville, TX.

For the first time the group collected a landing fee of pet food to be donated to the local animal shelter. The shelter manager estimates the club donated a week-and-a-half to two weeks’ supply. The local newspaper reported the fly-in and the donation, including a photo, which helped the club maintain a positive image in the community.

This project is a well-done community outreach service program. Thank you to John Rice for the report.

Cen Tex Modelers — Boy Scouts Introduction to Model Aviation

On June 8, 2002, Cen Tex Modelers Inc. hosted Troop 287 of the Boy Scouts of America at the club flying field to introduce the Scouts to model aviation.

Eleven Scouts and six guests were introduced to a wide variety of model aircraft, including:

  • Rubber-powered and stick-built kits
  • Electrics
  • 1/2A control line models
  • Radio control (RC) models: basic trainers, sport, pattern, large aircraft, combat, scale, and helicopters
  • Two RC towline gliders

Before flying began, the club president addressed the group, stressing the importance of safety and describing frequency control. Participants were shown the inside of a model and briefed on the function of radio equipment. Flying demonstrations of all types of aircraft were given, and enthusiasm peaked when the Scouts were given the opportunity to fly using a buddy box with experienced fliers. Hands-on experience was a pleasant surprise for them. The day was topped off with a hot dog lunch provided by the club. Friendly interaction between guests and members made for a totally satisfying day for all.

Submitted by club secretary Charles C. Culver, with assistance from Jim Andrukates and Robert Mass. This was another well-executed community outreach program; thank you for the report.

CPR Certification Incentive

What is your life worth? In a time of crisis at a club modeling activity, having someone certified in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) immediately at hand can make a critical difference. Chris Berardi, president of the Ft. Worth Thunderbirds, informed me that his club offers a year’s free membership to those certified in CPR. Members need only present their CPR certificate to an officer to have membership renewed automatically. Wouldn’t it be nice if all your fellow club members were certified?
