Mike Reuter, of the South Lane R/C Modelers in Eugene, OR, sent the following notes and photos of the club's oldest member. Guy Oliver is 81 years young and was a Marine aviator and a Corsair pilot in the South Pacific.
Guy flew many missions and was knocked out of the air in a midair collision with another Corsair during a combat mission.
The South Lane R/C Modelers have two flying fields. One is a mile east of Creswell, OR, at an old landfill site that is now a county park; the second field is four miles east of Cottage Grove and is leased from a timber company. According to Mike, the club members are primarily fun fliers. Good plan, guys—having two fields.
June 21, 22, and 23 found a gathering of large models at Gary Weaver's field in Odessa, WA. Gary has developed a great site with a large grass field and unobstructed approaches. The event was very well attended, with fliers from as far away as Sandpoint, ID. There were roughly thirty fliers and more than double that number of aircraft. One would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite from this array of big aircraft.
Thanks, Gary, for a great weekend. Many of us will be looking forward to the next one. Things will get better—despite our efforts to improve them.
