Spacewalker
Put a classic scale sport model in your hangar
Jesse Anglin created the full-scale, home-built Spacewalker in the early 1980s. His goal was to capture the essence of 1930s sport airplanes. The single-seat, low-wing monoplane was destined to become a classic and has been the subject of both ARF and kit models.
In the mid-1990s, Laddie Mikulasko designed his Spacewalker model to have electric power. However, Ni-Cd batteries and a geared AstroFlight 15 motor were the best available at the time. Today's brushless motors and Li-Poly batteries could easily shave a bit off the model's reported 64-ounce flying weight.
According to Laddie, this four-channel aircraft flies well; it is stable in the air and has good aerobatic capabilities. Its 54.5-inch wingspan makes it easy to see, especially if finished in the classic yellow-and-red scheme.
Laddie's Spacewalker was featured in a construction article in the July 1994 MA, which members can access via the digital archives on the Academy's website. This design is AMA Plans Service listing 760C, and it is available for $15 plus shipping and handling. See page 183 or go to www.modelaircraft.org/plans.aspx for ordering information.
