B-17 Gathering & Big Bird Fly-In

Gene Hempel

From September 20–22, 1991, about 180 pilots gathered at Bomber Field in Monaville, Texas, for the Bomber Field organization's third annual Gathering of B-17 Flying Fortresses, held in conjunction with its annual Big Bird Fly-In.

Over 200 models were on exhibit. A brand-new, ready-to-fly 10-foot-wingspan B-17G, built by Bomber Field members, was raffled off to David Klippel of Pasadena, Texas.

Net proceeds from the event were donated to the Sunshine Kids organization.

Bill Stevens won the Perpetual Trophy with his beautiful B-17F.

A Confederate Air Force B-17 flyby proved the highlight of the 1991 event. Based in Galveston, Texas, this aircraft had been restored within the past year. There was nothing quite like the purr of those four engines as the B-17 made a low-speed pass over the field.
