CL Reel Winder

WHEN THE GANG down at the flying field saw the Control Line reel winder, everyone had a comment: "Why didn't I think of that?" "Make me one!" "I have to have one of them!" It is a simple device and you wonder why you have been struggling with your fingers through the holes of the reel and the line going every which way. Just insert the winder from the flat side of the reel and wind her up.

Materials

  • Strip of sheet aluminum, 1/16" thick × 1/2" wide × 3 1/2" long
  • Three pieces of dowel (various diameters)
  • Three screws

The center hole of a Sig reel is 13/16" diameter, and the smaller hole is 1/16" diameter. If you don't have a dowel that fits exactly, whittle, file, or sand one to fit.

Construction

  1. Place the crank handle on the long end of the aluminum strip.
  2. Install the two dowels that must rotate so they fit in the reel holes; screw them in only far enough so the dowels can rotate freely. Drill the holes in the aluminum strip a little oversize for easy rotation.
  3. Install the smallest dowel (which does not need to rotate) and screw it down tight.

The longest piece of dowel is the grip and is a fairly loose fit in the center hole of the reel.

Notes

  • Several examples of the winder have been made; the design is simple and effective.
  • No matter how many sets of lines you have in your flight box, you only need one winder. It sure does make line reeling easy.
