Control Line Safety Proposal

The CLCB is considering a safety proposal, submitted by Bev Wisniewski, which would require, in addition to present rules relating to this same general area, that: "Either the pilot must be holding the control handle or one of the pit crew (pilot's helpers) must be holding the aircraft any time the engine is running. Failure to comply with this rule shall result in a foul if the control handle safety thong restrains the model. If the safety thong does not restrain the model, or if a safety thong is not required and is also not used, then failure to comply with this rule shall result in the contestant being barred from further competition in the event and all of his previous flights in the event shall be cancelled."

This proposed rule shall be applicable either to all CL events under the jurisdiction of the CLCB, or to Carrier and Speed only — to be determined by CLCB vote.

How the Contest Board Procedure Works

In emergency situations, a safety proposal can be put into effect immediately by mutual agreement of the AMA president and the Contest Board chairman. Other options for handling a safety proposal are:

  1. Conduct a vote of the Contest Board to determine whether to consider the proposal at all.
  2. Conduct a vote to determine whether to enforce the proposal immediately or wait until the proposal is ratified by a second vote of the Contest Board.

With respect to the safety proposal mentioned earlier, the CLCB voted (see voting summary in the attached table) to consider the proposal but not to enforce it until it is successfully ratified by a second vote. In all cases, a ratifying vote of the Contest Board is required before a safety proposal can become part of the AMA rules.
