1983 ANNUAL FAI/CIAM MEETING REPORTS
AMA President
John Grigg
Fifteen people representing the United States attended the CIAM meeting this year. This included 11 members of subcommittees, the CIAM Secretary, our voting Delegate, our Alternate Delegate, and one official observer. We were also privileged to have Bryant Thompson join us as an unofficial observer at his own expense. The wives of five of the above people accompanied us; their expenses were paid by their husbands.
The two-day meeting commenced on the morning of December 1 and concluded about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 2. Each committee member and our voting delegate will have their reports in this same issue, so I won't tread on their areas. However, several of the U.S. proposals were withdrawn with my permission prior to the voting session, and I feel these should be explained.
During the Soaring Technical Committee meeting, it became quite obvious that the U.S. man-on-man proposal would never survive a vote on the floor—virtually the entire committee favored the German proposal for man-on-man. Since we want our foot in the door with man-on-man, we felt it best to withdraw our version and lend support to the popular version. We can now propose changes to the thinking and fine-tune the basic concept (which only a year ago was soundly defeated).

National Records
Beginning with this issue, the "Competition Newsletter" will publish a monthly list of all AMA National Records which have been recorded during the previous month. This list will supplement the full-page National listing which appears less frequently (an attempt is made to publish the large list on a quarterly basis, but it is all too frequently delayed by the "space crunch" for an additional month or two).
Every National Record issued during the month will be listed. This may result in more than one record being issued for the same event and age category in any given month.

His first-place wins were in Indoor Paper Stick, Indoor Easy B, Indoor Hand-Launched Glider, Indoor Peanut Scale, Ya Scale, A Gas, Mulvihill Rubber, AMA Rubber Scale, and P-30.
Second-place wins were in Indoor Penny-plane, Indoor AMA Scale, A-1 Towline Glider, and Outdoor Peanut Scale.
