AMA members can obtain a 1984 Control Line World Championships Booster Packet at half price. The World Champs are scheduled for September 17–22, 1984, at Westover AFB, Chicopee, MA. Even if you don't plan to attend, the Booster Packet is a great souvenir.
Included in the Booster Packet:
- Official cloth patch ($5 value)
- Official enamel pin ($5 value)
- Official decals ($2 value)
- Official program book ($2 value)
- Supporter Site Pass ($6 value)
That's $20 worth of items for only $10. The $10 price applies to direct sales at the World Champs site and at the 1984 AMA Nationals. Mail orders require an additional $2 for postage and handling. No orders will be shipped prior to September 1, 1984.
The Supporter Site Pass entitles Boosters to purchase up to two Victory Banquet tickets (available at the CL World Champs site). It also provides parking access inside the competition site (spectators must park outside the site fence) and access to the Supporters' zone at the official flight circles (located between the Spectator and Competitor areas). The Site Pass grants unlimited access for the week and includes a personal identification badge.
Please note there is no charge for spectators to view the World Championship events; however, parking and access to the competition circles will be less favorable for spectators than for Boosters/Supporters.

1984 U.S. CL Speed and Team Race Teams Selected
Speed trials and Team Race finals were conducted at two sites. Speed trials were held over the 1983 Labor Day weekend at Merced, CA, and Speed and Team Race finals were held October 8–9 in Houston, TX.
Speed Team members selected:
- Bob Spahr (Santa Ana, CA)
- Carl Dodge (Richmond Heights, OH)
- Chuck Schuette (Vancouver, WA)
Note: Charles Vassalo (Vancouver, WA), whose model performance qualified him as a team member, was replaced because his handicap prevents him from piloting the model and FAI rules do not permit proxy flying in the Speed event. Chuck Schuette, a prior U.S. CL team member, replaced him.
Team Race teams selected:
- J. E. Albritton (Vienna, VA) / Walt Perkins (Ocala, FL)
- Stew Willoughby (Addison, IL) / Bob Oge (St. Charles, IL)
- John McCollum (El Toro, CA) / Tom Knoppi (Seattle, WA)
First alternates:
- Speed first alternate: Luke Roy (Fairfield, CA)
- Team Race first alternate team: Jeff Hollfelder (Castro Valley, CA) / Tim Gillott (Salinas, CA)
A more complete report on these finals will appear next month.

NATS RC News / Planning Meeting (Reno, NV — February 11, 1984)
At the Nats Planning Meeting held in Reno, NV, it was agreed to add three events to the official event schedule compared with last year’s Nats schedule.
RC Pattern
- The new (1984–85 AMA rule book) FAI RC Turnaround Pattern will be flown in addition to the four established Pattern classes: Sportsman, Advanced, Expert, and Masters.
- Pattern contestants must choose one of the five Pattern classes to enter; they may not enter more than one Pattern class at the Nats.
RC Helicopter
- FAI RC Helicopter, flown unofficially at the 1983 Nats, will be an official event in 1984.
- Helicopter pilots may enter up to three classes: Novice/Intermediate/Expert, Scale, and FAI.
- Helicopter events will run three days (Monday through Wednesday) at a separate site in Reno to avoid compatibility issues with RC Soaring.
RC Soaring
- RC Soaring will have six flying days instead of four:
- Monday–Wednesday: AMA Duration
- Thursday: Scale
- Friday–Saturday: FAI (F3B)
RC Pylon
- Greater emphasis is expected on the FAI Pylon class this year because a 1985 World Championships for Pylon is likely; the U.S. team would be chosen based on the 1984 Nats FAI Pylon results.
- FAI Pylon will be run on Sunday, followed on Monday by Quarter Midget. Quarter Midget will run Monday–Tuesday, followed by three days for Formula I, and Saturday for FAI.
All RC
- 27 MHz operation has been eliminated for all RC events at the 1984 Nats. Participation on 27 MHz has been low and the Nats Executive Committee decided to phase out these frequencies. Events will use 72 MHz and the 6-meter amateur-band frequencies.

'84 Nats Features Static Model Show
The Static Display Contest introduced at the 1983 Nats will be repeated at the 1984 Reno Nats. This event is open to everyone— you do not have to be a Nats contestant and you do not have to pay the Nats entry fee. There is a $1 entry fee per plane.
- You may enter as many categories as you wish (judging is done by the entrants).
- All models will be displayed in the Reno Convention Center (also the AMA Nats HQ).
- Adequate security will be provided for displayed models.
- Special trophies will be awarded; in 1983 some categories had no entries, so prizes went unclaimed (including Best Junior awards for FF, CL, and RC).
To enter or obtain further information, write to Vince Mankowski, National Center for Aeromodeling, 1810 Samuel Morse Drive, Reston, VA 22090, or call (703) 435-0750 (weekdays, 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Eastern time).

Nats Indoor RC: Partial List of Event Rules
In addition to the regular AMA and FAI Free Flight Indoor events (to be flown during the first three days of Nats week), there will be at least three more days of indoor events, including several categories of RC and CL.
Among the RC events:
- Electric-Powered Duration
- Electric-Powered Scale (heavier-than-air models)
Other categories will include CO2 and Rubber-powered events.

The NATS is coming! — Reno, Nevada (August 5–12)
The 1984 National Championships promise to be one of the biggest and best Nats ever. Over 300 room reservation requests had been received at AMA Headquarters as of early March. AMA has arranged reduced peak-season room rates for members during the Nats.
- To reserve rooms, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to AMA Headquarters, NATS Rooms, 1810 Samuel Morse Drive, Reston, VA 22090. AMA will send a room reservation form to be returned to the Reno Housing Authority (address on the form). AMA will also add your name to the list to receive NATS Contestant Kits when they are printed (early April). Contestant Kits contain entry forms, rules details, and scheduling information.
- Arrangements to accommodate motorhomes and campers are being made; contact AMA for details.
A vacation for your whole family
- Reno/Lake Tahoe area offers hiking, water sports, scenic trips, historic sites, museums, and tours of gold and silver mines.
- Several special side trips will be available to contestants and families.
- Information on Reno attractions will be available at NATS Headquarters during the Nats. You may also write to the Reno Convention and Visitors Authority, Box 837, Reno, NV 89504. Be sure to mention you will be in town for the AMA Nats.
The National Convention
- NATS Headquarters will be in the Reno Coliseum, which will also host early-week indoor flying.
- From 6:00 p.m. onward during the week, the National Convention will be in full swing at the Coliseum.
- Events include a special Indoor RC contest, evening seminars and discussion groups run by Special Interest Groups, manufacturers, and experts, and the Static Show.
- Model manufacturers will display products on the convention floor.
Time is getting short
- Reno is busy in August and rooms may be in short supply. Request room reservation forms from AMA as soon as possible.

National Records
No new National Record applications were received in February.
Record holders
- Travis Hunter (Simi Valley, CA) set multiple national records in 1983 as a junior: B Gas Categories I, II, III; C Gas Categories I, II, III; and D Gas Categories II and III. His first 1984 record is in the Senior category: D Gas Category I at 29 minutes, 50 seconds.
- Equipment: Travis flies a modified Satellite 450 (.10) with K&B .21 power in Class B; a Satellite 788 powered by a K&B .40 in Class C; and his Class D model (R) is the same plane with a K&B .41.
