'84 Nats Sullivan Award Winner

Junior contestant Aaron Markos (Deerfield, IL) won the Matty Sullivan Memorial Award at the 1984 Nationals — he also won it last year.

Aaron was exceptionally successful in both Indoor and Outdoor Free Flight events, earning top-two finishes in a total of 14 events. His placings include:

  • Indoor first-place trophies:
  • AMA Scale
  • Peanut Scale
  • Paper Stick
  • Pennyplane
  • Hand-Launched Glider (All‑Wood)
  • Indoor second-place:
  • Easy B
  • Outdoor first-place trophies:
  • AMA Rubber Scale
  • 1/2A Gas
  • A Gas
  • A-1 Towline Glider
  • Hand-Launched Glider
  • P-30 Rubber
  • Outdoor second-place trophies:
  • Peanut Scale
  • Mulvihill Rubber

Count them up: 11 firsts and 3 seconds = 14 first- or second-place awards. The Matty Sullivan Memorial Award is presented to the Junior contestant at the AMA Nationals who has the best record of performance. Aaron was 13 at this year’s Nats, so he is eligible to compete again next year (and possibly in 1986, depending on his fifteenth birthday relative to the contest date).

1985 Nats Set

Plan now to attend the 1985 AMA National Contest — the world's biggest model meet — scheduled for July 27 through August 4, 1985 at Westover AFB, Chicopee, MA (same site as the 1983 Nats). The start date is Saturday, July 27, 1985 (one day earlier than the traditional Sunday start). Detailed schedules and added events will be published as planning is completed.

Nats Trophies

The list of Nats winners in this issue identifies every competitor who should have received a Nats trophy.

If your name appears and you did not pick up your trophy at the Nats:

  • Send a request stating event and place, and include your name, address, and AMA number to:
  • AMA HQ, Attn: Bob Vojslavek
  • Include a check or money order for $10 to cover packaging and mailing.
  • Requests received before November 15, 1984 will be processed more quickly.

Modelers are requested to respond as soon as possible.

CL Emergency Proposal

Ron McNally, chairman of the Control Line Contest Board, has notified the Competition Department at AMA HQ that a proposal already in process as a standard rule-change (see CL‑86‑37) is being handled as an Emergency Proposal and is recommended for immediate enforcement.

  • Requestor: W. R. Lee (Missouri City, TX)
  • Original submitter: James E. Ricketts (Sioux Falls, SD)
  • Justification: Safety concerns raised by racing fliers at a meeting held at the 1984 Nats (unanimous support of over 30 attendees). Bill Lee (CLC B member, District VIII) also supported Emergency action.

Proposal (summary):

  • Include in the CL Racing Unified Rules a restriction that racing fuel shall contain no more than 10% nitromethane by volume.

Emergency Proposal (detailed fuel spec):

  • For CL Racing events (with the exception of 1/2A events), the fuel shall contain:
  • Not more than 10% nitromethane,
  • Not less than 20% lubricant,
  • Remainder methanol.

Modeler input:

  • Interested modelers should contact their Control Line Contest Board member in their AMA district (names and addresses are in the Competition Directory) to express opinions.
  • The Contest Board intends to vote on this Emergency Proposal within four to six weeks of publication.

Lost and Found

Items found at the September 1984 Control Line World Championships, Chicopee, MA:

  • Large camera sun shade
  • Camera lens filter
  • Set of car keys

Contact AMA HQ at (703) 659‑0751 for more information; items correctly identified will be returned to the owner(s).

1984 Nats Sponsors

The Nationals incurs many expenses beyond trophies — telephone rental, tables, trash pickup, special equipment, etc. Costs are covered by sponsorships and entry fees; the Academy gratefully acknowledges the support of sponsors (sponsor list appears in the official program).

RC Racing Rules Proposals (RCR-86 series — summaries)

  • RCR‑86‑1: Clarify use of alternate/backup models (prohibit returning to a previously used model during the same contest flight).
  • RCR‑86‑2: Change engine availability criterion to a numeric cutoff (e.g., 500 units available for purchase in the U.S.) for production engine eligibility.
  • RCR‑86‑3: Clarify definition of mufflers; prohibit tuned-pipe systems in the event.
  • RCR‑86‑4: Safety — clarify collisions/contact and empower Starter to black-flag unsafe flying.
  • RCR‑86‑6: Clarify use of mufflers; allow optional muffler use determined by local conditions; only manufacturers' advertised mufflers acceptable.
  • RCR‑86‑7: Muffler characteristics and approved list; Contest Board to publish approved mufflers annually.
  • RCR‑86‑8: End “engine legality” confusion — make production/availability the sole criterion with numeric thresholds.
  • RCR‑86‑9: Revise aircraft construction rules to require the builder to be the person who applies for entry (as in Formula 1).
  • RCR‑86‑10: Add rules for Electric Pylon Racing (equipment specs and classes).
  • RCR‑86‑11: Qualify use of backup aircraft (must be reported to Contest Director before the flight).
  • RCR‑86‑12: Revise handicap judging system for F1.
  • RCR‑86‑13: Eliminate scale three‑view drawing requirement for F1.
  • RCR‑86‑14: Delete certain mandatory flight demonstrations in F1.

  • SO‑86‑7: Clarify model sailplane definition (use of power during launch/flight).
  • SO‑86‑8: Electric-powered sailplanes — permit motor assist for launch with motor-power limits.
  • IND‑86‑2 / IND‑86‑3: Allow modern covering materials for Paper Stick and Paper/Tissue classes if planform/weights retained.
  • IND‑86‑4: Allow modern lightweight hardware in indoor construction where weight savings do not alter flight characteristics.
  • SC‑86‑4 to SC‑86‑41: Many Scale proposals including clarifications for CL Sport Scale, allowances for four‑stroke engines, Sport and Giant Scale timing and documentation changes, Giant Scale status, Peanut Scale scoring changes, new RC Electric Scale events, and more. (See full proposals for details.)
  • CL‑86‑8 to CL‑86‑44: Numerous Control Line proposals covering Combat engine sizes and safety rules, racing fuel and line specifications, Carrier event fuel/muffler/weight clarifications, Slow Rat rule revisions, and many procedural and safety clarifications. Of note:

  • CL‑86‑30: Increase minimum single-strand control-line diameter from .008" to .010".
  • CL‑86‑31: Require standard fuel for Carrier classes (max 10% nitro, 20% lubricant, remainder methanol).
