CL Safety Proposal
This item is published to fulfill the Contest Board Procedures' requirements for publicizing a Safety Proposal.
The Control Line Contest Board recently received a proposal originated by James F. Ricketts (Sioux Falls, SD) and submitted by Bill Lee, CL Contest Board member from District VIII. The proposer wants all CL Racing events (except 1/2A) restricted to the use of 10% nitro fuel, with not less than 20% lubricant, the remainder being methanol.
In accordance with approved procedures, the CL Contest Board chairman polled the Board to determine how this proposal should be handled: Immediate enforcement; No immediate ruling; or Denial. The result of the vote was that the proposal should be handled with No immediate ruling. That is, it is accepted as a Safety Proposal, but no enforcement will occur until after a further Ratification Vote.
The Next Step
Within four to six weeks from the publication of this vote, the CLCB chairman will send the Board a ballot requiring them to approve or disapprove adoption of this rule. Modelers are invited to express their opinions on the proposed rule to their AMA District CL Contest Board members.
Unusual Circumstance
This proposal is also being handled in the regular rules proposal cycle as CL-86-37. It has passed the Initial Vote.
'85 RC Pylon World Champs Moving to U.S.?
At press time, the possibility was rapidly developing that the 1985 RC Pylon World Championships would be relocated to the U.S. Previously, the Canadians received FAI approval to hold both the RC Helicopter and RC Pylon World Championships in London, Ontario, Canada on July 14–19, 1985. However, a problem developed with respect to holding both events, and at the end of January 1985 it was announced that while the Helicopter event would proceed as scheduled, Canada would have to withdraw from hosting the Pylon event.
AMA officials, concerned that cancellation of the first Pylon World Championships might set the event back for years to come, produced a plan to host the event in the U.S. at Chicopee, MA, immediately following the 1985 Nationals. The event is now tentatively scheduled for August 3–7, 1985 at Westover AFB. Many details were still being developed; a more complete report will be published next month.
U.S. Indoor Team: Call for Bids for Finals Site
The next Indoor World Championships will be in 1986, and the team selection process for the U.S. team is already under way. Erv Rodemsky, Chairman of the Team Selection Committee, has advised AMA HQ that a site for the Team Finals is needed (and a Contest Director).
Clubs or individuals are invited to send responses directly to: Erv Rodemsky 26 Warmspring Irvine, CA 92714 Telephone: (714) 786-0277
RC Aerobatics Team: Finals Site Bids
Three site offers have been received for the RC Aerobatics Team Finals (Masters Tournament), to be held later in 1985 (either June 21–23 or June 28–30). The three sites to be voted on by the contestants eligible for the Masters Tournament are:
- Dalhart, TX (submitted by the Dalhart chamber/organization)
- Chenault AFB, Lake Charles, LA (submitted by the Lake Area Radio Kontrol Society)
- Pueblo, CO (submitted by the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce and the Pueblo Sky Coral RC Group)
Finals participants will be informed directly of the winning site. Notice of the ballot result will be published at the earliest possible date.
1986 Scale World Champs: U.S. Team Selection Program
The team selection meet for the 1986 U.S. Scale team will be held near Louisville, KY (at E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park) on August 23–25, 1985. This will be for both RC and CL fliers.
Deadlines to Remember
- Entry deadline: August 4, 1985.
- Entry fee: $50 (half of the fee will be used to defray the cost of running the Finals).
- All competitors must have the $10 FAA stamp affixed to their AMA license.
- Refunds of the entry fee may be obtained through August 19, 1985.
Contest organizers: The National Association of Scale Aeromodelers (NASA — a special-interest group) will coordinate the event with Louisville-area host clubs and the Southern Indiana RC Modelers.
Advance notice: Any RC or CL Scale modeler planning to attend should contact: John Guenther RR 1, Box 715 Borden, IN 47106
1986 RC Electroflight World Champs: U.S. Team Selection Program
It is very likely that Switzerland will host the first FAI F3E Electroflight World Championships in 1986 (final FAI approval is required). A U.S. team will be selected to compete in the World Championships. The team will be composed of three fliers, one each for the three F3E events: Soaring, Pylon Racing, and Pattern.
Time Is Short!
Team selection planning must be completed by April 1985. Qualifying meet locations will be planned based on the roster of modelers who indicate participation, so interested modelers should register intentions as soon as possible. Register with: Joe Beshar 198 Merit Dr. Oradell, NJ 07649 Telephone: (201) 261-1281
"Foxberg" Rules (brief)
Except for facing vent tubes into the airstream, AMA Slow Rat rules will be used for racing and circle layout. The Slow Rat model specifications which do not conflict with the organizer's rules will be used. There will be no fuel or prop restrictions. Models need not be built from a kit; however, they must be identical to kit-built models in size and shape. Any model-modification features listed on the kit plans may be used.
Organizers: Norfolk Aeromodelers MAC (Norfolk, VA). Event Director: either Robert Ward or Gene Daniels. Sponsors: Carl Goldberg Models and the Landing Strip Hobby Shop (Virginia Beach, VA).
Competition Newsletter — Qualifying Trials and Finals (FAI program details)
- Selected Contests: Winning at one of the limited Selected Contests will also qualify a contestant for the Finals. Any contest on the FAI calendar is automatically a Selected Contest. Selected Contests are planned in eight geographic areas: Northwest (2 contests); West (4); Mountain (1); South Central (1); U.S. Nationals; East (3); General Midwest (3).
- Fees: Entry fee for a Selected Contest is $10, in addition to Program fee ($5), Qualification fee ($20), and Semi-Final fee ($20). There is an option to qualify by payment of an additional $20 fee (in addition to the $20 Semi-Finals fee).
- Automatic advancement: The 1985 team manager, assistant team manager, and the three team members will be allowed to advance to the Finals automatically. Junior contestants will not have to pay Semi-Final or Final entry fees. All contestants must have the $10 FAA stamp on their 1985 AMA licenses.
Limits to Finals
To keep the number of contestants at the Finals reasonable, the number of contestants advanced from a Semi-Final meet will be restricted by the formula: Number = (number of fliers at local Semi-Final x 30) / (total number of fliers in all Semi-Finals)
Additional provisions:
- At least one flier will be advanced in each event from each Semi-Final, regardless of the number of fliers.
- Any flier making at least 95% of the winning time in his event at a Semi-Final will also be advanced, even if he would not have been advanced under the formula.
- Alternates will be chosen; alternates must have scored at least 80% of the score of the lowest-placing Finalist at that Semi-Final.
Schedule
- Qualification Trials: December 1, 1984 – August 18, 1985.
- Semi-Finals: from Labor Day weekend 1985 through the first weekend in November 1985.
- Finals: to be held at a location west of Seguin, TX, within a three-day period between June 15, 1986 and the first weekend in November 1986.
- Finals entry fee: $40 per flier per event (except Juniors).
To enter the program, send a $5 fee to AMA HQ, attention Micheline Madison, FAI Director.
Note: There are more details available to official entrants when they enter the program.
