FF Team News

Modelers wishing to attend the 1985 Free Flight World Championships (August 11–18, Livno, Yugoslavia) as Official Supporters must register with AMA HQ, Attention: Competition Dept., by May 1, 1985. Cost is $300 (does not include transportation to Yugoslavia) and includes seven nights' lodging at an official hotel, all meals including the awards banquet, an excursion to the Adriatic coast, and round-trip transportation between the hotel and the contest site.

Supporters wishing to travel with the team should make travel arrangements through Giselle's Travel (Sacramento, CA). Contact: Mary Jane Drinkwater, Group Travel Dept. Call (916) 922-5500. The team will leave JFK Airport (New York City) Sunday, August 4, and fly to Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. Rental cars will be obtained there for the trip to Livno.

Passports are required. A Yugoslavian visa can be obtained by writing: Embassy of the S.F.R. of Yugoslavia, 2410 California St. N.W., Washington, DC 20008.

Persons wishing to attend the World Championships as spectators must make their own travel and lodging arrangements. AMA notes that contest organizers tend to monopolize nearby hotel reservations, so housing may present a problem. Contact: Roger Simpson, 2625 Queenwood Dr., Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.

RC Aerobatics Masters Tournament Site Selected

A recent poll of competitors eligible to participate in the 1985 Masters Tournament selected Lake Charles, LA, as the site. The vote eliminated the other candidate sites: Pueblo, CO and Dalhart, TX.

RC Pylon Team Selection Program

  • The competition will be run strictly in accordance with the FAI rules.
  • Entrants must be AMA members and must have the 1985 FAI stamp ("$10 stamp") attached to their AMA license.
  • Entry fee for team selection: $50, sent to AMA HQ, Attention: Competition Dept.

Rules Proposals Revisions

The newly revised Contest Board Procedures provide that, prior to the Final Vote on proposals and after the Initial Vote has taken place, proposal wording may be modified by Contest Board chairmen (with concurrence of the proposer) to improve clarity or compatibility with other proposals. Several such changes have occurred. The Contest Board's Final Vote will be completed by its May 1, 1985 deadline.

RCA-86-6 — Revise Sport Aerobatics section

Revisions include:

  • Section 40.10: an Educational competition class (FAI) has been added to the basic three competition classes.
  • Section 40.10.2: revised to instruct Contest Directors and meet sponsors that deviations from standard rules must be explained to competitors before competition begins (for example, separate Biplane–Monoplane events or separation of Giant and Standard-size aircraft for large meets).
  • Section 40.11.1 (Contestant Classification): added statement — "Advancement from the Advanced class to FAI or Unlimited Class is optional at any time."
  • CD Guide: added recommendation — "Contestants should fly two sequences on each flight whenever possible to speed up the contest."

SC-86-12 — Allow larger three-view plans in Scale documentation for Sport Scale

Modification to par. 53.A.4.5: If a three-view plan of more than one page and/or larger than 8½ × 11 inches is submitted as part of the presentation, it will be counted as one page only of the six pages allowed. Plans larger than 8½ × 11 must be submitted flat and mounted on cardboard or other stiff backing.

SC-86-17 — Remove projecting sharp objects before flight

Original wording referring to "projecting sharp objects, such as pitot tubes" has been revised to: "Sharp pitot tubes that protrude from the wing or fuselage of a model will be removed before flight." This amends the originally proposed revisions to par. 53.A.2 and 53.A.5.F.

RCH-86-2 — Completely revise Helicopter rules

The original RCH-86-2 proposal was divided (with the submitter's permission) into eight sub-proposals (A–H). These passed the Initial Vote from the RC Helicopter Contest Board. Summaries follow.

#### RCH-86-2-A — Modify course layout

  • Baseline moved an additional 50 feet away from the judges and spectator area, resulting in total distances of 90 and 150 feet, respectively, to the main helipad for the Novice course (Helipad 1).
  • Helipad 1 located 40 feet from the judges' chairs; judges located 60 feet from the spectator line.
  • Helipad 3 located 15 feet to the side of Helipad 1; Helipad 4 at 50 feet; Helipad 5 at 100 feet — all positioned 90 degrees to the wind and away from judges' position.
  • The fifth helipad serves as the center of the 360-degree Fly-Around and the first half of the flying Figure Eight.

#### RCH-86-2-B — Upgrade AMA Novice class

  • Add maneuver: "Lift Off — Hover 360 degrees, tail in — Land" to reduce the proficiency gap between Novice and Intermediate.
  • With Novice made autonomous, K-factors are eliminated.
  • AMA Novice Maneuvers:
  1. Lift Off — 15-second stationary hover — Land.
  2. Lift Off — Hover forward to Pad No. 2 — Land.
  3. Lift Off — Hover backward to Pad No. 1 — Land.
  4. Lift Off — Hover sideways to Pad No. 3 — Land.
  5. Lift Off — Hover sideways to Pad No. 1 — Land.
  6. Lift Off — Hover constant-heading Figure Eight — Land.
  7. Lift Off — Hover 360 degrees, tail in — Land.

#### RCH-86-2-C — Upgrade AMA Intermediate class

  • Remove "14-second Stationary Hover" and "Constant Heading Figure Eight" from the Intermediate schedule.
  • Change "45-degree Climbout" to include a 15-second Hover before transition into the 45-degree Climbout.
  • Substitute a translational landing for the present "10. Landing" and add Chandelle and Stall Turn maneuvers.
  • With Intermediate made autonomous, K-factors are eliminated.
  • AMA Intermediate Maneuvers:
  1. Lift Off — 15-second Hover — 45° Climbout.
  2. Procedure Turn.
  3. Figure Eight.
  4. Translational Landing.
  5. Chandelle.
  6. Stall Turn.
  7. 360-degree Flyaround.

#### RCH-86-2-D — Upgrade AMA Expert to FAI F3C class

  • Delete the present AMA Expert class and substitute the FAI F3C competition class. The two classes have coexisted and are similar in pilot proficiency; combining moves toward World Championship standards.

#### RCH-86-2-E — Add class-advancement system

  • System awards multiplying factors of 1, 2 and 3 for first, second and third places, respectively. These factors are multiplied by the number of entries in Novice/Intermediate at a contest. Totals are forwarded to the RC Helicopter Contest Board chairman and a running total is kept. When a contestant's total reaches 50, the contestant must move up to the next higher class.
  • Enforcement is difficult; Contest Directors are encouraged to forward results to the RC Helicopter Contest Board chair for record keeping.

#### RCH-86-2-F — Modify par. 53.8 RC Helicopter Scale

  • Adjust judging distance from 15 feet to 3 feet to allow proper judging of cockpit, craftsmanship and finish.
  • Change static category maximum from 150 points to 100 points per judge (three judges = 300 points per round per static category, 900 total static maximum).
  • Add two flight maneuvers: 360-degree Hover (tail-in) and Translational Landing.
  • With five flight maneuvers and revised K-factor, the maximum flight and static scores are made equal, preserving balance between static and flight scoring.

#### RCH-86-2-G — Update General section 46 (RC Helicopters)

  • Covers general-section wording changes resulting from the above sub-proposals. Detailed wording not included here.

#### RCH-86-2-H — Update Judges' Guide

  • Covers updated Judges' Guide with maneuver descriptions and clarifications. Detailed wording not included here.
