AMA Wants Computer Programs

Modelers having computer programs for scoring Free Flight and Control Line events are asked to contact Vince Mankowski at AMA HQ. He would like to collect and evaluate any such programs with an eye to using them at big AMA-sponsored meets (like the Nationals) in the future.

Contact Vince Mankowski at AMA HQ: (703) 435-0750 during normal Eastern time office hours, or write to AMA HQ.

U.S. FAI RC Aerobatics Team Chosen

The three-member U.S. RC Aerobatics team was selected at the Masters Tournament, held June 21–23, 1985 at Lake Charles, LA.

Representing the U.S. at the 1985 FAI F3A World Championships (September 8–14, 1985; Flevohof, The Netherlands) will be:

  • Anthony Fraczkowiak (Loveland, OH)
  • Bill Cunningham (Tulsa, OK)
  • Dwaine Brown (Hamilton, OH)

Team management:

  • Team manager: Dick Penrod (Wayne, PA)
  • Assistant team manager: Steve Helms (Pensacola, FL)
  • First alternate: Steve Rojek (Niceville, FL)

RC Pylon World Champs Supporter Package Available

Modelers wishing to attend the forthcoming 1985 RC Pylon World Championships (August 3–7, 1985; Westover AFB, Chicopee, MA) as spectators may find it to their advantage to obtain the status of Supporters by paying the $10.00 entry fee.

Some advantages of being a Supporter include:

  • Parking space close to the contest activity (spectator parking will be considerably farther away)
  • Three box lunches at the field (one per day)
  • A set of official souvenirs
  • Admission to any special social events scheduled for official participants

The term "Supporter" is literal: the fee paid provides financial support to make the event possible. Without such support, competitor entry fees would have to be much higher, and the event could not be held without extensive commercial sponsorship.

Normally, a country hosting a World Championship has about two years to plan and finance the event. This year, AMA took on the obligation of hosting the RC Pylon World Championships with only six months' notice after Canada could not fulfill their prior obligation. Since this year's World Champs will be the very first one for RC Pylon Racing, it was important to run it as scheduled by the FAI, even at financial risk, to avoid delaying world acceptance of the activity.

Besides the previously mentioned benefits, Supporters may also obtain lodging at the official hotel(s) and buy a ticket to the closing banquet.

Lodging cost: $110 per person (double occupancy) for five nights (August 3–7). Banquet ticket: $30. A special package is available to AMA members only giving all three items (Supporter fee, lodging, and banquet) for $200 instead of the combined price of $240.

Booster Packet Also Available

AMA members can obtain a 1985 RC Pylon World Championships Booster Packet for half price ($10). Even if you don't plan to attend the World Champs, this is a desirable souvenir collection.

Booster Packet contents (value in parentheses):

  • Official patch ($5)
  • Official enamel pin ($5)
  • Official decals ($2)
  • Official program ($2)
  • Supporter Site Pass ($6)

Total value: $20 for only $10. For $2 more the package will include an additional 1985 World Champs pin.

If you plan to attend the World Champs, note:

  • Only Boosters, Supporters, and Competitors may purchase Victory Banquet tickets.
  • The Supporter Site Pass included in the Booster Packet entitles boosters to purchase up to two banquet tickets (at the site).
  • The Supporter Site Pass provides parking and access to the competitor sites beyond where spectators may go; spectators must park outside the site fence.
  • Boosters/Supporters may park inside, near the site, and have access to the Supporters' area between the spectator and competitor areas.
  • The Site Pass provides unlimited access all week (rather than daily charges) and includes a personal identification badge.

There will be no charge for spectators to see the World Championship events, but parking and access to the competition area will be less favorable than for Boosters/Supporters.

To order the Booster Packet by mail, send $10 plus $2 for postage and handling to: Supply and Service Dept., AMA HQ, 1810 Samuel Morse Drive, Reston, VA 22090.

RC Pylon Team Selection Finals

  • By Bob Brown
  • Photos by the author

FAI Pylon Racing is much like the U.S. Formula I event. In fact, it is possible to use the familiar Formula I craft in this event—provided that the engines use no-nitro fuel and an appropriate engine-silencing device. For the first time since the 1974 Aerolympics in Lakehurst, NJ, the U.S. will compete in international RC Pylon Racing—this time for the first World Championship.

The United States has an international Pylon team which should be the team to beat at the FAI Pylon World Championships to be held at Chicopee, MA. The team, comprised of Dave Shadel, Tom Christopher, and Ernie Nikodem, was chosen at San Luis Obispo, CA during the weekend of May 18, 1985.

The San Luis Obispo club (SLO Fliers, Inc.) conducted the first U.S. team-selection race for FAI Pylon. The competitors were fortunate that the SLO club had such efficient personnel. If the FAI had an award for contest excellence, it would certainly go to the SLO club.

Dave Shadel needs little introduction to anyone who follows Formula I racing. His supremacy in Formula I carried over into FAI. Dave used the typical Super Tigre–powered Formula I aircraft to qualify for the number one position.

The second team member, Tom Christopher, used a rather unique approach to make the team. His model of a French Caudron proved that racing models do not have to look like a Goodyear racer in order to go fast.

Ernie Nikodem, the third team member, used a replica of a P-40Q. Not only did Ernie qualify, his son J. obtained his Air Force wings within the same week. The Nikodem family must certainly be flying high!

If some misfortune happens to any of the top three team members, the alternate member, Art Arro, will provide the needed backup.

At the conclusion of the meet, the newly formed team elected Gary Hover as the team manager. Gary, the current Pylon Contest Board chairman, was an excellent choice.

August 7, 1985 will be the day the first FAI Pylon World Champion will be crowned. There is an excellent chance that the champion will be from the United States.

Thanks again to Contest Director Tom Wiggin, Starter Wayne Scurr, and the entire SLO club for their excellent effort in providing the team-selection race.
