MORE NATIONAL CONTEST INFORMATION

This issue should reach subscribers very near to the advance entry postmark deadline of July 1, and it is hoped that most flyers will have entered by then because this eases the processing of paperwork — and allows entry at a considerable savings over late fees.

The 1976 Nats is scheduled for August 1 through August 8 in Ohio — with indoor events to be flown in the 65-ft. ceiling State Fairgrounds Coliseum at Columbus; control power events, Control Line events and limited-duration Free Flight events at Wright Field, Dayton; and Free Flight and RC Soaring events at Springfield Municipal Airport.

Entry Form Errors

Control Line Slow Rat Race. Although this event was shown properly in the daily schedule (Monday, August 2), it inadvertently was left off the listing of events on the actual entry form. Because of this, a notice is being sent with all Nats entry form acknowledgments advising that Slow Rat Race may be entered (without any late penalty) by returning the special form with event fee (if required) no later than July 15.

Control Line D Speed. A separate line, by error, was not shown for this event — but since this concerns only designation, all Open entrants who mark C Speed automatically will go into D Speed. (By the new rule book designations, the previous Open C Class is now Class D.)

Master Pattern Qualifying. The correct K factor for the Takeoff is 5 (not 10 as shown in the RC events information of the entry form).

Testor's Trophy for Best Finish (new info for CL & RC Sport Scale models entered in the Best Finish competition). All models competing for Best Finish must be turned in at the Scale Cage in the Nats hangar at Wright Airbase between 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 2. Contestants with Sport Scale models (either CL or RC) who wish to enter the Best Finish contest must also turn in their models by 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and at the time of turn in they must be sure to notify the registrar that the model is a Sport Scale entry.

Testor's Best Finish judging will be concluded by 10 p.m. on Monday, August 2 — at which time, and up to 10:30 p.m., all Sport Scale models which were entered (and also all non-Scale entries) must be picked up. This is so that Sport Scale models will not be on view prior to Sport Scale judging. Models entered in AMA Scale events will remain in the Scale Cage until judging is completed.

Sport Scale entrants are reminded that they must report to the Scale Cage (without models) to receive their judging appointment cards — on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. for Control Line, on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. for Radio Control. This special procedure, which is in accordance with instructions on the Nats entry form, is necessary to avoid premature display of Sport Scale models which could prejudice judging.

Late Entry Information

If the July 1 deadline is missed, entry still is possible at the contest site during the Nats in accordance with the Late Entry and Add Events section of the Official Schedule — which is printed in this issue — for Indoor, Free Flight, Control Line and Scale events. For Radio Control events (other than RC Scale which has different late entry deadlines for AMA and Sport Scale, as per the schedule), late entry in the Nats must be accomplished no later than one hour prior to the close of transmitter processing, as shown below. Example: Q.M. Pylon processing is shown as 3-5 p.m.; late entry (at AMA Nats HQ) must be completed by 4 p.m. For RC Soaring, late entry must be accomplished at AMA Nats HQ (Wright Airbase) by 5 p.m., Wednesday, August 4.

Transmitter Processing Schedule

  • Quarter Midget Pylon: Sunday, August 1, 3-5 p.m.
  • Pattern: Monday, August 2, 8-11 a.m.
  • Formula I Pylon: Wednesday, August 4, 3-6 p.m.
  • All Scale: Friday, August 6, 10-12 a.m.
  • RC Soaring: Wednesday, August 4, 4-6 p.m. (Springfield Airport)

Sketches show relationships between Nats flying sites at Wright Field and Springfield Municipal Airport and the nearby dorms to each, respectively, University of Dayton and Wittenberg University. Those who pay for dorms in advance to AMA may proceed directly to the dorms upon arrival in the area. See text.

Anyone who thinks he might enter the 1976 Nats should obtain the complete 6-page Nats entry form, from which the information here was extracted, as it contains much other useful information. Simply send a request to AMA HQ, 815 Fifteenth St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005; please include a stamped pre-addressed envelope.

Late Basic Entry Fee for Juniors and Seniors is $5.00 (same as advance fee, and includes entry in three events) and $35.00 for Open members (no events included). Event fees for late entries, or for events added at the Nats by advance entrants, are $5.00 per event for all age categories — except RC, which are $10.00 per event.

Mechanics Fee, advance or late, is $3.00. It provides identification and field access privileges equivalent to contestants. Available to AMA members only. A Nats-only membership is included in the $3.00 fee for members of a contestant's family.

Nats Housing

Advance Dormitory Registration. Campus housing is available near two of the Nats flying sites (Columbus, where the indoor events will be held, is the exception). See accompanying drawings for locations. Rates are $7.00 per person per day, two in each room, and $14.00 per day, single occupancy. Children who do not occupy a bed — but use a sleeping bag, for example — will not be charged. Dormitories are at the University of Dayton (near Wright Field) and Wittenberg University (near Springfield) and are expected to be ample in number — so that no priority system is needed. But dorm processing can be expedited (no long lines at the Nats!) by payment in advance to AMA HQ, so you can go directly to the dorms upon your arrival in the Nats area. A two-step process is required: (1) get the dorm form from AMA HQ (write for same or check the appropriate box on the Nats entry form); (2) fill it out and send it with a check or money order, payable to AMA, before July 15. AMA will send a special card to be presented at the dorm for immediate occupancy.

Breakfast at University of Dayton. Those staying on the campus may obtain cafeteria breakfasts at the Community Memorial Union on a pay-as-you-go basis from July 31 through August 9. Breakfast starts each day at 6:30 a.m., with the following menu: hot cakes, French toast, waffles, scrambled eggs, fried eggs (but not to order), toast, sausage, bacon, cold cereal.

Motels. The accompanying list shows some of the motels which are relatively convenient to the flying areas. At the time of listing, most had rooms available for Nats week, though no AMA guarantees or recommendations are meant or implied. Reservations must be made directly — AMA does not handle motel reservations.

Camping sites at Springfield Municipal Airport are available for tents, trailers and overnight motor home or recreational vehicle parking for a flat rate of $10.00 for the week per site. Pay at the Nats. There will be no electrical power to individual campsites, but the camp area includes portable toilets. At present there still was a possibility of arranging additional camping sites on nearby Wright Field; inquire at the Nats. Private and state-operated campgrounds in the Springfield–Dayton area are as follows; arrangements with these must be made directly:

  • Bass Lake Campgrounds. Class A. 3 miles S.W. of Springfield, I-70 Business Rt. & St. Rt. 4, Upper Valley Park Exit. (513) 323-2981.
  • Crawford's Market & Campground. Class A. 4 miles east of Springfield on St. Rt. 40, 1/2 mile from Exits 62 & 66 off I-70. (513) 568-4266.
  • Eden Beach Campground. I-70 on Enon Rd. Exit. Box 758, Enon, OH 45323. (513) 823-6431. See ad on page 91.
  • John Bryan State Park. Class B. 2 miles east of Yellow Springs, south of St. Rt. 343; 10 miles south of Springfield and 20 miles east of Dayton. Route 1, Box 74, Yellow Springs, OH 45387. (513) 767-1274.

Indoor Site Camping & Dorms

Camping indoors is available on the State Fairgrounds, scene of the 1976 Nats Indoor events. Campsites include electricity, water, and a dumping station, but no toilets. However, campers may use the toilets at the nearby Rhodes Center, which is also the dorm location. The dorms are barracks type, 14–36 people per room, $3.00 per night for ages up to 18, $6.00 per night for adults. Linens and pillows are provided, but no towels. No advance registration necessary — proceed directly to the State Fairgrounds. Available July 31 through August 2.

MORE NATIONAL CONTEST INFORMATION

This issue should reach subscribers very near the advance-entry postmark deadline, July 1. Special-form event fee required no later than July 15.
