COMPETITION NEWSLETTER
COMPETITION RULES QUESTIONNAIRE-- YOUR CHANCE TO SPEAK UP!
This month the "Competition Newsletter" devotes several pages to questionnaires concerning competition rules proposals. Contained, to the best of our knowledge, are all of the proposals under considera- tion for possible implementation as new rules or changed rules to be effective in 1976 and 1977 (except for the omission of several proposals having the sole purpose of rearrangement of present rules for clarity). Presented in this manner, it is easy for the AMA member to check off his desires, clip the page, and send to the appropriate Contest Board member. WE URGE ALL MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS QUESTIONNAIRE AND MAIL BY AUGUST 15 (or sooner if possible).
Note that there are separate question- naires for Radio Control, Free Flight, Control Line, Scale and General proposals.
It is suggested that a questionnaire be submitted when any proposal is within a competitor's area of interest. Do so even if no change to existing rules is de- sired, for only in this way can all points of view be represented adequately. Use a separate sheet of paper to elaborate on your opinion, if desired, always iden- tifying the proposal number.
Note that the questionnaires, in most all cases, state the proposed change (or addition) and present the current rule. Those in favor of adopting the change (or addition) should check off the "yes" space, whereas those wishing to retain the current rule should check off the "no" space.
In a few instances there is more than one choice concerning a particular kind of proposed revision. Here, first indi- cate yes or no as to whether any change is needed, then -- even if your response is no -- indicate which of the choices is best. Where there are only two choices, simply check off the best one; where there are three choices, rank them in order of desirability -- with 1 going to the best, 2 to next best and 3 to the least desired.
The proposals of the questionnaires are, generally, arranged in rule book se- quence. In this presentation there was insufficient space to make comparisons between the existing rule and the proposed new rule, so it is suggested that the rule book be reviewed as the questionnaire forms are filled out. Utmost care was used in wording the questionnaire proposed changes, but in case of any error, the ori- ginal proposal or cross-proposal governs. The numbers preceding each item identify the proposal or cross-proposal for refer- ence to summaries previously published in CN.
YOUR OPINIONS ARE IMPORTANT. Each Con- test Board member is expected to utilize the results of his category question- naires, together with opinions expressed to him in letters or in person from individ- uals and clubs, and all other inputs avail- able to him, in determining the vote for his district.
1975 NATIONAL CONTEST
LAST-MINUTE INFO
The deadline for entering the 1975 Na- tionals in advance by mail (for the low- est cost) has already passed, but so-called late entry at the site, Chenault Airbase, Lake Charles, La., is still possible. And entered or not, everyone is invited to come and watch. The dates: August 3-10, 1975.
Scale
The Scale events this year will be held on the scheduled dates. The last- minute rescheduling of 1974 made Nats management vividly aware of how far people came just to spectate; so a lesson was learned, and spectators shouldn't en- counter that situation again. Also the RC layout has been revised for 1975 so that where necessary grass area (which gets muddy following rain) will be minimized; everyone will be on a paved surface.
RC Pylon Racing
The following conditions will apply.
- An NMPRA (National Miniature Pylon
Racing Assn.) type safety check will be made on all models. The entire airplane will be checked for structural integrity in- cluding control surfaces and radio instal- lation. Safety keepers will be required on all push rod ends (rubber tubing over cle- vis, or wheel collars, or 'Z' bend rod ends).
- Heat racing will be conducted Formula
1 and Quarter Midget—no qualifi- cation rounds. A ready line and back-up line will be formed at the pit area. If contestants are late coming to the ready line when planes are released to flight line, he will automatically take off last.
- For Quarter Midgets an idling demon-
stration (not an idling contest) at takeoff will be required for the first round. Landing deadstick will be penalized 1/2 point for each round in which such landing is made. Order of takeoff will be determ- ined by a coin toss at the ready line.
- Formula 1 transmitter processing
and airplane specification check will be made at 3:00 pm and end at 6:00 pm. Formula 1 handicap judging will begin promptly at 6 pm on Wednesday, Aug. 6. All models to be judged must be on hand at that time. A special larger scale will be used for judging. This, together with a simpli- fied ranking system, should avoid last year's crowding and late hours.
- Scale judging for Formula 1 will be
conducted at the end of processing by a simplified ranking system. Planes will be divided into six groups, and given a number from one to six. Takeoff orders will be determined by handicap numbers. If two planes ranked the same come up in the same heat, a coin toss will decide the starting order between them. This sys- tem is similar to the 1-through-4 groupings used at other meets, but is an NMPRA-recommended adaptation for large meets.
- A special trophy award will be
given to the best in F-1 scale judging, and for the fastest times for F-1 and Q-M.
- An NMPRA annual meeting will be held.
held at 7:30 pm Thursday, Aug. 7. Place will be announced at the contest.
Free Flight
In the July issue of FF and in the August issue (CN section) it was indicated that much land clearing was being done at the Chenault Airbase, so that Free Flight conditions would be improved. That's still true but not quite to the extent that had been hoped. It has turned out that a major segment of the land clearing, involving a future golf course, will not be of much help to FF—too many trees will remain, and the terrain will be too rough.
So our hopes for a greatly improved situation for FF have been dimmed somewhat. However, the situation still will be better than last year, which was much better than the year before. Additional land clearing that is underway will provide more distance at an angle to the main runway in the event of a drift shift from our worst situation last year. In summary: better than last year although not quite as good as we had expected.
RC Soaring
The Rodeway Inn in Sulphur, La., is the HQ motel for Nats Soaring events, but should the Rodeway become filled, the alternate suggested is the Delta Downs Motor Inn, 10 miles west of Sulphur on I-10 (the next exit west).
NATS "UNOFFICIAL" EVENTS
In addition to the more than 50 official competition events at the 1975 National Contests, there are a number of "unofficial" events held in cooperation with, but just outside of, Nats management; for these, direction and prizes are furnished by their sponsors. The 1975 Nats "unofficial" events known to us are as follows.
Radio Control
RC Helicopter. Competition on August 2 and 3 (practice and judge training on August 1) in the classifications of Novice, Intermediate, Expert and Standoff Scale. Organized and directed by Walt Schoonover; there will be awards through 3rd in each class plus special awards for the most realistic and technically best helicopter and for the single best performance.

FAI PROPOSALS — AUGUST 1 DEADLINE
Proposals to revise the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) competition rules may be submitted by any AMA member to AMA HQ for being considered as agenda items for the next CIAM meeting late this year. Proposals need to be submitted by August 1 and should include the exact wording of the rule for which revision is desired, exact wording of the proposed change, and a brief statement of why the change is needed.
CL CONTEST BOARD REPLACEMENTS
District I: George Higgins (21 Edison Park, Quincy, Mass. 02169) has accepted appointment as replacement for John Scott, Jr., who resigned June 1.
District VI: Bob Burch (1442 S. Central, Apt. 4, Cicero, Ill. 60650) replaces Gary Frost who, we are saddened to report, has been charged in the death of his wife. In a related matter, Rich "Von" Lopez, 300 Frankfort St., Daly City, Calif. 94014, has assumed the duties of president of the Miniature Aircraft Combat Assn. Lopez was runner-up to Frost in MACA's election.
ENVELOPES GET MEET RESULTS
Some of the guys in the Northeast are trying to get a little more cooperation among the clubs there by publishing a new newsletter, Flashback, with all contest results, contest photos and comments. This is a cooperative effort, meaning CDs send in results completely typed, ready to photocopy. Subscriptions are only available by sending in as many self-addressed and 10¢-stamped envelopes as you want. Subscription forms run with the last envelope! No charge for subscriptions... just do the work of addressing.
Send typed contest results, photos, commentary... and those envelopes to Ed Whitten, Box 176, Wall St. Sta., New York, N.Y. 10005.
CL MEET TO BENEFIT CHARITY
Besides the likelihood that the August 31 Control Line Meet at DeKalb, Ill. will be an excellent one for its events and outstanding awards, what really makes it special is that it is organized for the benefit of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. The Class AAA meet is aptly named 1st Annual Aero Challenge for Muscular Dystrophy.
In addition to contest entry fees, the event will feature several unique aspects in its attempt to raise funds. Contest Director Bill "Moose" Allen says the money collected will be presented to the Illinois chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation which, in turn, will forward the monies to the Jerry Lewis National Telethon in progress that day. A special, live, very worthwhile, is expected coverage of the event on Rockford's WCEE‑TV.
