Scale Team Selection
Six members of the U.S. team for the 1978 World Championships will be selected at the 1977 Nationals this August. Three RC and three CL members of the team will be picked on the basis of their performance in the regular AMA Scale events in those categories. The only requirement other than entry in the event is that they pay a team selection entry fee (in addition to the Nats entry fee) prior to flying in these events. The top three fliers in each category who have paid the team selection entry fee will constitute the 1978 U.S. team.
The entry fee is $20 if paid to AMA HQ by July 15; $25 if paid to Nats HQ at the site. All entry fee money will go toward offsetting travel expenses from team members' homes to the port of departure from the U.S. AMA will pay the cost of over-ocean travel, plus the entry fees to the World Championships, which is expected to be held in England next year.
Team members will be selected according to AMA rules, even though FAI rules will be used in the World Championships. It is desired, though not required, that the Nats entries meet FAI rules so that, hopefully, these models may be flown in the World Championships. However, it is the team members' choice as to whether he enters his Nats model or a different one in the World Championships.
Control Line Aerobatics Team Selection Program
Based upon a vote by previous participants (primarily) in the CL Aerobatics Team Selection Program, the three-member 1978 U.S. team will be selected from the results of a single Team Finals contest at Atlanta, GA over the 1977 Labor Day weekend, September 3-4. All AMA members having the $5 FAI Stamp and model(s) complying with the FAI CL Aerobatics rules are eligible to participate in the Team Finals; no pre-qualification of any kind is required. The entry fee, payable at the site, has been fixed at $50.00 for Open age fliers and $25.00 for Junior or Senior age entrants. The event will be directed by the Precision Aerobatics Model Pilots Association (PAMPA).
The Atlanta site at Fort Gillem, a concrete aircraft parking ramp, is said to offer a good flat surface large enough for at least four or five circles. Local fliers have expressed considerable enthusiasm in being host to the Team Finals.
Entry fees have been fixed with several purposes in mind: administrative expenses for the Team Finals; travel of judges, and travel assistance within the U.S. for the eventual team. Over-ocean travel for the team (the 1978 World Championships for this event is expected to be in England) is funded through an apportionment of AMA dues.
How Participants Voted
The vote was 21 to 7 that a non-central site (greater than 500 miles from Kansas City) is acceptable. Opposition was 26 to 3 for scheduling the Team Finals in connection with the 1977 National Contest. Fifteen favored the Atlanta location, while 12 were for St. Louis, MO. Labor Day weekend was preferred over the Columbus Day weekend 19 to nine.
FAI Rules Similar to AMA
Generally speaking, a CL Aerobatics model which conforms to AMA rules will also qualify under FAI rules if the engine has a muffler. The FAI maneuver schedule is essentially the same as the AMA maneuver schedule, although scoring differs. FAI use K-factors according to the degree of difficulty of the maneuver. There is no appearance judging under FAI rules.
CL Team Race & Speed Team Selection Programs
Some details are yet to be worked out, but the following has so far been decided concerning selection of Control Line teams to the 1978 World Championships which is expected to be held in England. The basics which follow have been approved by the AMA president following polling of previous program participants for inputs as to desired time and place for holding the team selection finals meets in 1977:
Team Race.
One contest will decide the U.S. team, on the opening weekend of the Nats, August 6-7, at the Nats site—March Air Force Base, near Riverside, California. Of 15 responses to a questionnaire sent out in February, 14 indicated preference for holding the event either during or immediately preceding the Nats. Problems involved with trying to hold the event during the Nats dictated that the event be held before the other Nats CL events begin. Entry fee, if paid in advance to AMA by July 15, is $20; if paid at the Nats site, $25. Note: entry fees are per person (pilot and mechanic). In submitting program entry, state for which event, and identify who is pilot and who is mechanic.
Speed.
Two contests, one in the West and the other in the East, will decide the U.S. team. The first is to be on August 6-7 at the Nats site—March Air Force Base, near Riverside, California. The second is to be over the Labor Day weekend at an eastern location yet to be decided. Program participants will be eligible to fly in either or both events. The team is to be selected by the three best times, regardless of location. Entry fee is the same as for Team Race: $20 if paid to AMA by July 15; $25 if at the Finals site. One entry fee payment allows flying at both sites.
For Both Speed and Team Race.
The entry fees will be used to defray costs of team member transportation from home to the port of departure from the U.S. AMA will pay the over-ocean transportation cost, plus World Championships entry fees. Team Race entry fees will go to Team Race team members. Speed fees will go to Speed Team members.
All AMA members who have the $5 FAI Stamp and model(s) complying with FAI rules are eligible to enter the team trials described above. See 1976-1977 AMA rule book for model specifications.
Nats Unofficial Events
In addition to the more than 60 official competition events of the 1977 National Contest, there are expected to be a number of "unofficial" events held in cooperation with, but just outside of, Nats management. For these, direction and prizes are furnished by their sponsors. The 1977 Nats "unofficial" events known to us as of press time are as follows; any others who are running such events are requested to quickly send details to CN for publication.
Control Line "A" Stunt. Under sponsorship of Cox Hobbies, the Precision Aerobatics Model Pilots Association will run this event in three AMA age categories (Junior, Senior and Open) and award prizes through third place in each. AMA Precision Aerobatics rules will apply except: .051 cu. in. maximum engine displacement; no builder-of-model requirement (may be ready-to-fly, built-up kit, or scratchbuilt); no appearance points; 1/2A AMA numbers permissible. The AMA maneuver schedule and attempt rules apply as do the .008" minimum diameter of the lines and 5-lb. pull test.
Flying Wing Contest. The Northrop Flying Wing Contest (11th Annual) will be run this year as Nats "unofficial" events under the direction of Carl Hatrack, FF CD, 3825 W. 144 Street, Hawthorne, CA 90250 and Dave Jones, RC CD. Flying Wing Free Flight will be flown on Monday, August 8, 8 am to 2 pm, for three events: 1. Rubber or Jetex power; 2. Gas or Electric power (15-sec motor run); 3. Towline (164' line). For Control Line, events will be a 3-minute max. The Flying Wing Radio Control event on Saturday, August 13, 8 am to 2 pm, will be for Sailplanes and use the Task IIIA rules—1,000-ft. winch launch and release. Each of the events, FF and RC, will be flown with Jr.-Sr.-Op. combined; the entry fee is $3.00.

Two More Control Line Cross‑Proposals
Received after the closing date for the CN section of the May Model Aviation, but postmarked in time to be valid, were the following two cross‑proposals—presented here as a matter of record even though most readers aren't apt to have the information in sufficient time to influence the Control Line Contest Board's Interim Vote (which is supposed to be concluded by May 1). Yet, if the cross‑proposals are accepted in the Interim Vote, there still will be time to lobby for or against them before the Final Vote (to be concluded by September 1). All proposals (or cross‑proposals) accepted in the Final Vote become new AMA competition rules starting January 1, 1978...
CL‑78‑57(PAAC)A—Precision Aerobatics, Metric Equivalents. The basic proposal is to adopt the FAI maneuver descriptions and dia‑grams (but not scoring) in place of the present AMA Precision Aerobatics maneuver descriptions—with metric equivalents in describing each maneuver. This cross‑proposal by Keith Trostle, Upper Marlboro, MD, is to provide metric equivalents throughout the CL Precision Aerobatics rules, as follows: 25.4 mm (one inch) in 31.2.3; (under 1.20 meters [3.9 feet]) in 31.3; 1.20 to 1.80 meters (3.9 to 5.9 feet) in 31.1.1; 1.50 meters (4.9 feet) in 31.1.1; line size and pull test, see separate chart. The cross‑proposal is intended to provide consistency in the manner units of measure are defined, assuming acceptance of the basic proposal.
CL‑78‑57(PAAC)B—Novice Aerobatics, Metric Equivalents. Cross‑proposal by Keith Trostle to also provide metric equivalents in this event in order to have consistency with the Precision Aerobatics Rules, as follows: 5.899cc (.3600 cu. in.) in 32.2; line size and pull test, see separate chart.

Rossi .15 R/C ABC Qualifies for Q.M. Pylon
An importer of the Rossi .15 R/C ABC engine has written that he has this engine available and for sale in excess of 1,000 units, thereby meeting the requirements for acceptability in Quarter Midget R/C Pylon Racing as provided by AMA competition rules.
Previously published as acceptable for Q.M. are the Cox Conquest .15 R/C, Rossi .15 R/C, K & B .15 R/C, Super Tigre Front Intake R/C, O.S. .15 R/C, Enya .15 R/C, Fox .15 R/C, and Taipan .15 R/C.
Formula VII Pylon Racing. Previously published as acceptable in these events are the K & B SR II 6.5cc Series 75, K & B .40 R/C (1972, 1973 and 1974 models), Super Tigre G40 and X40, HP .40 Front and Rear Rotor, O.S. .40 Schneider, Fox .40 R/C, Testor/McCoy .40 R/C and OPS .40.
Manufacturers and importers of engines not listed should contact AMA HQ immediately if they wish to claim "legality"—requiring 1,000 engines to be available.
Q.M. Pylon Replacement Carbs. The following statement comes from RC Contest Board Chairman Bill Northrop. "Answer to inquiries regarding the legality of using a manufactured aluminum‑bodied carburetor in place of the stock Perry carburetor which comes with the Rossi .15 R/C for Q.M. Pylon Racing: Although the specifications of the subject carburetor meet the intent of the rules, the carburetor is not legal until the manufacturer has submitted a statement to AMA declaring that the carburetor is cataloged for the Rossi .15 R/C engine, and that over 1,000 of the units are available through normal retail outlets. Upon approval of the statement by the RC Contest Board Chairman, it will be placed on file at AMA Headquarters. At that time, and not sooner, the carburetor will be legal for use in Q.M. Pylon Racing."

Scale Team Selection
Six members of the U.S. team for the 1978 World Championships will be selected at the 1977 Nationals in August. Three R/C and three C/L members of the team will be picked on the basis of performance in regular AMA Scale events. Categories, requirements and other entry-event matters:
- In addition to the Nats entry fee, prior flying events' top three fliers in each category who have paid the team-selection entry fee will constitute the 1978 U.S. team.
- Team-selection entry fee: $20 if paid to AMA Headquarters by July 15; $25 if paid at the Nats site. Entry-fee money will go toward offsetting travel expenses from team members' homes to the port of departure from the U.S.
- AMA will pay the cost of over-ocean travel plus entry fees.
The World Championships are expected to be held in England next year. Team members will be selected according to AMA rules, though FAI rules will be used at the World Championships. It is desired, though not required, that Nats entries meet FAI rules; hopefully models may be flown at the World Championships. However, it will be the team member's choice whether to enter at the Nats a model different from the one to be flown at the World Championships.

The World Championships are expected to be held in England and funded through apportionment of AMA dues.
Participants voted on site and scheduling. The vote favored a non-central site greater than 500 miles; Kansas City was acceptable. There was opposition regarding scheduling the Team Finals in connection with the 1977 National Contest. Fifteen favored the Atlanta location; 12 favored St. Louis, MO. Labor Day weekend was preferred over Columbus Day weekend by a vote of 19–9.
