RC AEROBATICS TEAM SELECTION PROGRAM

Proposal No. 2 Approved in Revote

A revote by those who participated in the first ballot, but concerning only Proposal No. 2, has resulted in approval by 23 to 13. This is a majority of almost 64%, whereas a minimum of 51% is required, with the numbers involved, for approval.

The approved program is the basis for selecting the U.S. three-man team for the 1979 RC Aerobatics World Championships. Flying in the program starts on April 29, 1978, but before that program entrants must register with AMA HQ and pay a program fee of $10.00. This should be done as soon as possible in order to provide adequate time for transmittal of the qualification form. Checks for the program fee should be payable to AMA and be identified for RC Aerobatics team selection.

Full details of the program are as follows.

Program Description

The three RC Aerobatics team members are to be determined by the results of a single national level Masters Tournament. The Masters Tournament is open to any Masters class flier who demonstrates a high level of flying proficiency. This demonstration of proficiency is accomplished by placing in the top third (33-1/3%) at any AMA contest conducted from April 29, 1978, through December 31, 1978.

Program Details

  1. Participant must be a current AMA member with an FAI ($5) stamp.
  1. Participant must be a Masters class flier prior to the team selection year. (This does not require being a Master class flier in 1977; entry in a Master class event automatically places the contestant in the Master class.)
  1. Each participant must register for the team selection program (forms will be provided) and pay a $10 program entry fee.
  1. To qualify for the Masters Tournament, participant must finish in the top one-third of the Masters class event at any AMA sanctioned meet held from April 29, 1978, through December 31, 1978. In determining the number to be qualified for the Masters Tournament, any fraction is to be rounded up to the next highest whole number (for example, the top four qualify when there are 10 contestants).
  1. The sanctioned meet must have at least five entrants making an official flight in the Masters class event.
  1. To allow proper planning of the Masters Tournament, pre-registration is required. Qualified entrants must complete and mail the entry form 45 days in advance of the date of the Masters Tournament.
  1. In an effort to make the Masters Tournament self-supporting, an entry fee of $150.00 will be required. This entry fee must accompany the pre-registration form. Any surplus funds will be returned to the Masters Tournament entrants.

You will be notified if you are eligible to attend. Alternates will be invited to attend if those who have qualified are unable to do so. Finals competition will be over the Labor Day weekend. The top three fliers will comprise the U.S. team; if any should be unable to attend, the first alternates from the finals will be invited.

It will not be known until March of 1978 where the World Championships will be held, but AMA has made a bid to have it here in the U.S. If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to write me. My address: Ray Marvin, 2781 S. Garfield, Denver, CO 80210.

RULES ADVISORY COMMITTEE UPDATE

Because of the diverse nature of modeling, separate Contest Boards have been established for Free Flight, Control Line, Radio Control and Scale—so that rules makers will be knowledgeable in their fields. Thus the FF Contest Board is comprised of FF’ers, the CL Contest Board of CL’ers, etc. But even within these categories of modeling, there are further breakdowns of diversity. In Control Line, for instance, there are events for Speed, Precision Aerobatics, Combat, Racing, Carrier, etc., and there is, to varying degrees, similar diversity in the other categories.

The drafters of the current Contest Board Procedures expected Contest Board members to have general knowledge of all the kinds of modeling within their sections but realized it was unreasonable to expect each board member to have intimate familiarity with all the specialties. It was with this thinking in mind that the Contest Board Procedures provide for the chairman of each Contest Board to appoint Advisory Committees to assist in the rules-making process, as follows (quoted from the CB Procedures):

"Advisory Committees and their Chairmen may be appointed by the Contest Board Chairman/Coordinator to assist the Board(s).

They will operate, generally, in accordance with Contest Board Procedures. Maximum utilization of existing special interest groups should be made in selecting Advisory Committee members. The final action/recommendations of such committees may include Rules Change Proposals which, if submitted in accordance with normal CB procedures, will be considered to have passed the Initial Vote and be processed further by the appropriate Board(s). The tenure of Advisory Committees will be determined by the appointing authority."

Advisory Committees currently authorized are as follows:

Handy wallet-size cards for recording classification advancement points in RC Pattern and RC Precision Scale are available upon request from AMA HQ and from Contest Directors of meets having these events. The card is used as per RC Pattern rule 37.7 and RC Scale rule 45.4—directions on the card. Use of the card by fliers and CD’s is important for the system’s functioning.
