CONTROL LINE GENERAL, SLOW COMBAT AND COMBAT RULES INTERPRETATIONS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

Scale Racing/Cheek Cowl Interpretations may be Effective 1/1/76

Background. These interpretations were requested by Bill Pardue and Warren Sanders and acted upon in accordance with Section 3 of the current Contest Board Procedures pertaining to Interpretations, Safety and/or Emergency Proposals. The CL Contest Board chairman and AMA president having decided to not take action in their own names, submitted the proposals to the CL Contest Board for determination after having sought opinions from the Combat and Racing Advisory Committees. The results are shown both in the text below and also in the chart of CL Contest Board member voting on page 62. Contest Board Procedures also require a ratification vote by the Contest Board four to six weeks after publication of interpretations or new rules enacted in

(Continued on page 62)

CLCB INTERPRETATIONS (cont.)

accordance with Section 3. This is to provide time for members to contact their district CLB members and campaign for a reversal in case the interpretation or new rule is thought to be inappropriate. The CL Contest Board, therefore, has time for voting on these interpretations about the first of November, and inputs from AMA members should be sent to district Control Line Contest Board members before that time.

The following interpretations (1.a., 1.b., 1.c., 1.d. & 3.a.) are effective immediately, and contestants should be governed accordingly.

1.a. Slow Combat. "Tail wheel" does not satisfy landing gear requirement.

1.b. Slow Combat. The "landing gear" clause is not intended to preclude a model which will not have a normal load-supporting landing gear, and the required "one wheel" must be in reasonable size proportion to the rest of the aircraft.

1.c. Slow Combat. The "landing gear" must be the main load-supporting landing gear and the required "one wheel" must be in reasonable size proportion to the rest of the aircraft.

1.d. Slow Combat. The "one wheel landing gear" shall provide full prop clearance when the model sits in a normal unstressed at-rest position.

  1. CL General. The interpretations above also apply to any other CL event in which there is a "landing gear" requirement and/or associated ROG requirement.

3.a. CL General. Line repairs or splices are not allowed unless the repair system is of a type shown for line terminations in paras. 20.5 through 20.5.7. Any system using at least three strands to provide end-to-end joining is acceptable and the aircraft is considered "terminated" when the joining is permanent; any system that relies on a knot is specifically not considered an acceptable repair.

When the board votes concerning ratification on 2.a., it will also be provided the opportunity to reaffirm its preference for the 2.a. wording or alternate wording in 2.a. Only permanent-type line end terminations and connections as shown and described in paragraphs 20.5 through 20.5.7 are permitted. Any system that relies on a knot is not permitted.

  1. Combat. When one or both control lines on a combat model are cut or break due to a line entanglement or collision (as will be charged "unfirable" on the grounds that it does not have a strong and workable control mechanism), as required in para. 31.1.3.c., the match shall then be terminated as required in para. 31.8.1 (one line unplayable) and the winner of the match shall be determined as required in para. 31.9.2.3 when a flight period is terminated. If both lines are cut and a "flyaway" occurs, both judges shall stop their watches immediately at the time of the "flyaway." If a line cut or breakage is not determined until the aircraft is inspected, the procedure in para. 31.9.1 shall be followed.

Notes: A means acceptable; N means not acceptable. A blank box means that no vote was cast. The number shown opposite each proposed interpretation represents the preference order for action desired by each board member, with number one being for the most desired action. Boxes opposite the letter a are for immediate effectivity of the interpretation with follow-up vote after publication; while the letter b is for no effectivity until after publication and follow-up vote, and the letter c is for no action to be taken on the interpretation request.

(Continued on next page)

CLCB INTERPRETATIONS (Cont.)

require check cowls when used to be within 5% scale in the side view and, to be decided, either of scale configurations in the other views or which 5% scale. Also to be decided in the event of adoption of the 5% view interpretations is whether verifying measurements should be made from the fuselage centerline or imaginary fuselage outer surface counterparts.

But whereas the board voted immediate effect for the CL General, Combat and Slow Combat interpretations preceding, the board's vote was to delay effect of Scale Racing check cowl interpretations; if passed on the ratification vote, until January 1, 1976.

Field tray with various accessories; rubber winders; camera cover; brass fittings; various name tags; a padlock. Owners may claim same by sending a description of the item to AMA HQ.

CONTROL LINE & SCALE CONTEST BOARDS DELAY FINAL VOTE

A major decision coming from the Control Line Contest Board meeting during the Nats was to delay to mid-September (instead of Sept. 1) the postmark deadline for the board's Final Vote on proposed contest rule changes to be effective in 1976. Part of the delay was to give time for the advisory committees (Speed, Combat, Aerobatics, Racing, Navy Carrier) to make recommendations to the Contest Boards before the Final Vote.

The Scale Contest Board similarly has delayed its Final Vote — and it is likely that the Final Votes by the Radio Control, Free Flight and General (combined) Contest Boards may be even somewhat later since, as of early September, voting forms had not been received by AMA HQ from the respective chairmen for distribution to board members.
