COMPETITION NEWSLETTER
Why the Separate Competition Newsletter?
This special edition of the Competition Newsletter became necessary due to the extra pages needed to include a complete Contest Calendar. In addition, the magazine received more advertising than ever before. Our printer couldn't accommodate all the extra pages required, so a separate mailing for the CN was decided upon.
Meanwhile, because the demand for more pages is expected to continue, negotiations have been underway to arrange for another printer with greater press capacity. During the transition (which may take another month or two), the mailing of a separate Competition Newsletter may be required several times. As soon as possible, however, the CN will return to being included as a regular feature in Model Aviation magazine.
For now, the separate CN provides a very complete Contest Calendar for handy reference during the next few months.
New AMA Patch Honors U.S. World Championships Team Members, Managers
A newly designed patch has been commissioned by AMA and will be awarded to all present and former U.S. team members and managers who participated in World Championships competition. Members of U.S. Wakefield teams in the old, pre-World Championships days will also be recipients of the patch.
This triangular, gold-on-white patch is suitable for sewing on a modeler's blazer, field jacket, flying shirt, or field hat. One patch (inscribed either Member or Manager, as appropriate) will be supplied free to each modeler who has represented the U.S. in Wakefield or World Championship competition. Patches have already been mailed out to the 1982 U.S. team members. Modelers who have been on previous teams are invited to request their patches from AMA HQ, Attention: Micheline Madison.
Additional patches are available to eligible modelers at $5 each.
Who Gets the Patches?
A search of AMA historical records reveals that 300 modelers have represented the U.S. in Wakefield and World Championships competitions—beginning with Gordon S. Light's win in Wakefield in 1933 and continuing up through the 1982 teams. Following is a listing of the team members, including the year(s) of their participation and the event(s) flown. The list is subdivided into five groupings: Outdoor Free Flight, Radio Control, Control Line, Scale, and Indoor, and the participants are arranged in alphabetical order in each group.
International Competition: The 1982 U.S. Team Managers
The CN has been reporting on who the U.S. team managers were as they were chosen, but that means that there's a little item here, and another little one elsewhere. Since these modelers are such a vital part of our international competition efforts and are worthy of whatever recognition we can give, we've decided to list them all in one spot.
- CL Scale team manager — John D. Preston
- RC Scale team manager — John Guenther
- Indoor team manager — Bud Romak
- CL team manager — Don Jehlik
- CL team assistant manager — Dave Elias
A Little Bit of the History
It may be of interest to note that the Wakefield Cup competition was the only international event drawing U.S. participation until 1953, when we began participating in FAI Power, too. In 1954, U.S. modelers competed in Nordic Glider. The U.S. entered FAI CL Speed in 1955. In 1960, Don Still, Bob Palmer and Steve Wooley flew FAI CL Aerobatics; Dolgner/Burke, Edwards/Edwards, Adams/Wate flew FAI CL Team Race; and Ed Kazmirski, Hal deBolt, and Bob Dunham flew FAI RC Aerobatics. Indoor FF drew a U.S. team in 1961. Scale saw U.S. fliers in 1970. We participated in FAI RC Soaring in 1977. The U.S. now regularly participates in all of these events today. Many AMA members have been World Champions in previous years.
Special Indoor Meet: West Baden, June 14–16, 1982
The NFFS and NIMAS have joined forces to promote the first of a series of high-ceiling, AAAA-level indoor contests. It is intended that these meets will be held in any year when the AMA Nationals is unable to offer a high-ceiling indoor site for their indoor event. On such occasions, the NFFS/NIMAS meet will be scheduled on dates which do not conflict with the Nats. It is planned that the site location will be rotated to various geographical locations in subsequent years.
This first meet will be held at the Northwood Institute in West Baden, IN on June 14–16, 1982—the three days immediately preceding the annual NIMAS Record Trials and the Peanut Scale Grand Prix. Since the AMA Nats will likely be held at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in 1983, the next of these NFFS/NIMAS meets may well be in California in 1984. The next (1985?) site would then be back at West Baden.
This initial contest will be managed jointly by the IMAC and the Chicago Aeronuts. The following events are planned: Manhattan, Bostonian, Paper Stick, Easy B, Pennyplane, Novice Pennyplane, Cabin, Stick, FID (in rounds), IHLG, Peanut Scale, AMA Scale, Kit Plan Scale, Peanut Speed and Unlimited Speed (circular course), plus special events, trials and demonstrations for intermediate microfilm class. Some events will have Junior and Senior combined, and others will have ages combined. An awards banquet is planned.
Entry fees are: Open—$10 basic plus $3 per event; Junior and Senior—$5 basic plus $2 per event. An additional dollar will be added to the basic and event fees if the contestant is not a member of either the NFFS or NIMAS. A lodging/meals package will be announced later. Obtain entry forms by writing: NFFS/NIMAS Indoor, 1655 Revere Drive, Brookfield, WI 53005.
