1982 NATIONALS WINNERS SUMMARY

'84 Combat Team Program News

The Team Trials for the 1984 FAI Combat Team are now only about a year away, and the Team Selection Committee is open for business. Everyone who flew in the trials for the 1980 and 1982 teams is eligible to vote on the new program, the date, and site for the next team trials. In addition, new program participants may become involved in the decisions by paying a $10 down payment toward the entry fee at AMA Headquarters, care of Micheline Madison.

The Team Selection Committee expects that having the next CL World Championships in the United States will increase the number of entries in the program and may possibly require some changes in the program.

AMA District V — Dick Obarski has replaced Jim Richmond as the District V FAI Indoor Team Selection Committee member. Dick was selected by vote to fill the vacancy created when Jim Richmond moved out of District V.

Pylon Race Engine Emergency Rule Final Vote

The RC Contest Board recently voted to approve the Emergency Proposal which reduces the minimum number of engines manufactured in order to be eligible to race in Formula 1 or Quarter Midget from 1,000 to 500. The vote was unanimous.

As reported in the August 1982 Competition Newsletter, AMA President John Grigg had approved an interim authorization (to last through December 1982) to change the minimum number manufactured from 1,000 to 500. The RC Contest Board considered an Emergency Rule Proposal to make this change permanent; the recent unanimous vote makes the change permanent. The 1984–85 rule book will reflect the change. Meanwhile, the rule is now in effect.

NMPRA Championship Race Date Changed

In last month's Pylon Racing column Bill Hager announced that the annual NMPRA Championship Race would be held in Seguin, TX on October 23–24. Before the October issue went to press the date was changed.

The 1982 NMPRA Championship Race will be held October 30–31 at Seguin, TX (the 1981 AMA Nats site). The field will be open for practice flying on October 29. This is a limited-entry competition; entry is by invitation only to NMPRA Formula I fliers who have passed the screening criteria.

New World Record Applications for Electromodels (F3E)

Back in the March 1982 issue we reported on 24 new world record categories for Electromodels. Although the categories were effective January 1, 1981, we have recently received news of 10 records set in October 1981 by several Russian modelers. Early in 1982, one Russian and one American posted world record applications for three categories.

For each type of Electromodel, record categories exist for Duration, Distance in a Straight Line, Height, Speed, Distance in a Closed Circuit, and Speed in a Closed Circuit. The four types of Electromodels are: R — using rechargeable batteries; N — using nonrechargeable batteries; SOL — using solar cells; COMB — using any type of self-contained (within the model, including solar cells) current source.

CL Speed Special Interest Group Forming

"Dedicated to the advancement of Control Line Speed" — that's the motto of the recently formed North American Speed Society (NASS). The motivating force behind NASS is Chris Sackett of North Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

In the first issue (Vol. 1, No. 1) of Speed Times, Editor Sackett states that NASS already has "nearly all of the active CL Speed fliers and many newcomers as members" (90 as of publication) — but he would like all modelers interested in this phase of the hobby to join.

Membership benefits include a membership card, three NASS decals, a name tag with personalized membership number, and the quarterly newsletter. Annual membership fees are $7.00 for Juniors (up to 14 years), $10.00 for Seniors (15–18 years), and $15.00 for Open (19 years and older).

The Speed Times first issue is 24 pages (12 sheets printed on both sides). The cover features a photo of Speed fliers at the Western States Championships (Merced, CA, September 1981). The issue includes limited advertising (FAI Speed kits, Bill Wisniewski's Pink Lady design), a useful "Parts Finder" listing sources for hard-to-find Speed equipment and engines, an index of CL Speed articles from 1955 to present, a "200 mph Club" list, a contest calendar, and an article by Bill Case on finishing a Speed pan (with sketches and screw/tap tables). Also included is a reprint (from August 1951 Air Trails) of Bill Wisniewski's Screamin' Demon article and a Northwest CL Regionals contest report.
