FF Team Manager Congratulated
At its in-person meeting held in Detroit, MI on November 20, 1982, the 1982 FAI Free Flight Team Selection Committee unanimously passed a resolution expressing sincere thanks to Reid Simpson for his outstanding performance as manager of the 1981 U.S. FF team. The committee lauded his profound understanding of the needs of the team, superb planning, and great devotion to duty in discharging his responsibilities. They expressed that the entire U.S. aeromodeling community owes him an unpayable debt of gratitude.

Emergency RC Rules Proposal
There has been controversy over the RC Pattern rule and how it was changed in the new rule book. A recent letter to the AMA president from Walter (Nic) Damuck, Jr., of Waterbury, CT proposed that the matter be re-voted by the RC Contest Board, possibly as an Emergency Proposal so the rules could be amended quickly. The letter was forwarded to the Chairman of the RC Contest Board, who polled the Board on whether to handle it as an Emergency Proposal.
The ballots indicated that an Emergency Proposal should be considered, with no immediate ruling but requiring input from all Board members and publication of the request at the earliest possible date; then proceed with a Final Vote.
The proposal is being published here to satisfy Contest Board procedures. Interested modelers can find the complete Contest Board procedures in the June 1982 Competition Newsletter. The next step will be the Contest Board's Final Vote, to be taken four to six weeks after publication of the Emergency Proposal (the Final Vote ballot will be sent to Board members sometime between the end of January and the middle of February 1983). Modelers who wish to express an opinion on this Emergency Proposal should contact, preferably in writing, the RC Contest Board member in their own AMA district before the Final Vote ballot is due to be returned to AMA HQ for tabulation.
Emergency RC Rules Proposal — RC-82-18 (Pattern)
Proposal RC-82-18 would:
- Change maneuvers in some Pattern classes.
- Provide suggested "short-list" class patterns to encourage uniformity at local contests.
- Shorten the Expert and Masters patterns to match the fuel capacity of pipe-equipped engines.
Changes to the various class patterns are given in the accompanying Table 1 (not included here). Russell Knetzger of Shorewood, WI states that the maneuver changes are proposed to reflect the principle of ever-increasing difficulty, and that the "short-list" patterns are intended to encourage more uniformity at local contests—where short-lists are often the rule rather than the exception.
This proposal revises paragraphs 39.16, 39.17, 39.18, and 39.19 (pp. 42–43) of the 1982–83 AMA rule book. Note: the original proposal has been edited slightly so that it is in harmony with the 1982–83 AMA rule book rather than the 1980–81 rule book which it originally addressed.
