World Record — RC Distance Flight

Contest Director Charlie Calvert congratulates Maynard Hill upon his completion of a 765 km (475.4 mi) closed-circuit RC distance flight on July 4, 1983. Maynard's original-design model had an empty weight of 6 lb. 14 oz. Its OS 60F-5 engine consumed about 85% (4 lb. 2 oz.) of the fuel carried in the plane's wing tank. The flight consisted of 765 laps around a 501-meter course laid out in a field near Sunshine, MD. The flight ended 9 hr. 17 min. after its 9:02 a.m. launch. The performance has been submitted to FAI as a new Class F3A world record.

Trophies and Mailing

Modelers who believe they should have received a Nationals trophy listed among winners but did not pick it up at Nationals may still obtain it. Send a request stating event, place, name, address, and AMA number to: AMA HQ, Attn.: Bob Voislavek. Include a check or money order for $10 to cover packaging and mailing.

  • Requests received before November 15, 1983 will be processed quickly; requests arriving later may take longer because of rush activity related to license-renewal time.
  • Note: Failure to request a trophy before year-end may result in its being placed in storage and possibly incurring additional costs.

For questions about packaging and mailing costs, contact: Keith Trostle, 10233 Peregrine, Fountain Valley, CA 92708.

Sponsors

Expenses involved in the National Model Airplane Championships — in addition to over 700 competition awards — include rental, telephones, tables, trash pick-up, special equipment, and other costs. These costs are covered by sponsorships and contest entry fees. Without sponsorships, entry costs would be higher and could discourage participation. Nationals has long been the world's biggest model meet because of joint AMA–industry sharing of costs. The Academy of Model Aeronautics proudly and gratefully acknowledges its sponsors.

World Championships Scheduling

World Championships are held in various categories on a two-year schedule, with different categories staggered so that championships occur in approximately three categories each year. For example, the 1983 World Championships were Free Flight, RC Soaring, and RC Aerobatics. The 1984 World Championships will be Scale, Indoor, and Control Line.
