Doc's Generix Kits

COMBAT fliers are fortunate to have an established cottage industry supplying materials for Combat at all levels. Doc Passen, the man behind Doc's Generix Kits, has expanded his line to include even more variety. While the performance level of his designs is slightly below what a pro might use (pros generally build their own designs), the sport flier will enjoy the variety and the polished appearance.

Available designs include:

  • Hot Dog — Super Slow Combat
  • Wasp — Fast Combat
  • Klipper — Slow Combat
  • 1/2A Shadow — for the .049 crowd

Doc is a master at dressing up a Plain Jane model to look like a World War II fighter. He has also boosted Nostalgia Combat with several replica kits of models flown or designed before 1962. Notable replicas include the Bill Netzeband Equalizer, the Guided Missile, and the Fleetwon. As with all Doc's kits, these come with full-size plans, good wood and many detail items (bellcranks, lead-out wire, elevator horns, etc.).

Engine Reworks and Recommendations

Mark and his partner Willie Wiley can rework AAC, ABC, or iron setups, rechrome and fit Fox Mark VI pistons/liners, and replace the trouble-prone roll pin with conventional circlips. They also offer their own scratch-built piston/liner-and-rod combinations and ready-to-go engines.

Notes and recommendations:

  • A stock Fox button often doesn't extend far enough into the cylinder to get the squish band close enough to the piston. Shimming the liner may help exhaust timing, but without removing a similar thickness from the head you can lower compression. Closing the exhaust port later will lower cylinder pressure further.
  • Mark believes a tight fit at the top of the stroke helps ABC-type engines: some builders dislike the squeak at top, but it aids hot restarts and power.
  • Fliers using Mark's piston/liner assemblies often use a larger-than-average prop; the engines pull well, are reliable, and run quieter at full throttle.
  • Engine reworks may take a couple of weeks; ready-to-go engines save time and often prove worth the extra cost.

Muffler Proposal and NCAC

A muffler proposal was discussed to improve sound control. The chosen exhaust exit diameter was selected to allow a simple legality check—a 1/2" rod will not fit inside a legal exhaust exit. That diameter should accommodate most commercially available mufflers while still providing reasonably effective silencing without requiring exhaust extensions as long as the airplanes.

The members of NCAC are open to suggestions. If you have additions or would like to propose changes, let them know now so work can begin.

Events — Bladder Grabber

The 15th annual Bladder Grabber was a tremendous success and again the largest Combat meet, with 54 entries and an outstanding field of competition. Phil Granderson defeated all comers, with Pete Athans finishing closest in the hunt.
