CONTROL LINE: SCALE

Cathy Burnstine, 797 NE Catawba Rd., Port Clinton OH 43452

Control Line Scale at the 1997 Nats brought participants from across the country. They presented a beautiful selection of model aircraft for static judging at the Horizon Center in downtown Muncie.

Static Judging

Before scale models are flown, they are judged for static realism. Each modeler must provide a presentation book that describes the prototype aircraft in detail. This book contains drawings, photos, and proof-of-color and enables the judges to compare the model to the documentation. The static score is based on how well the information presented is reproduced on the model; a score for craftsmanship is also awarded.

Flying Competition

After static judging was completed, the second part of the competition was based on the flying ability of these models. The total of static and flying scores determined the winners. The flight competition began with perfect flying weather and four events to be decided: Precision, Sport, Profile, and FAI F4B.

Events and Results

  • Sport Scale
  1. First: Jack Patrolia — Stevens Akro (consistently perfect flights)
  2. Second: Frank Beatty — Alexander Eaglerock
  3. Third: Lyn Green — P-61 Black Widow
  • Profile Scale
  1. First: Lyn Green — P-61 (another version)
  2. Second: Charles Snyder (Cincinnati, Ohio) — Hornet
  3. Third: Charlie Bauer — B-29 (spectacular)

A highlight of Profile Scale was Aaron Bauer, Charlie Bauer’s four-year-old grandson. Aaron entered a Volksplane that he and his grandfather built from a Goldberg Lil’ Wizard. The Volksplane has a 21-inch wingspan and is powered by a Cox Black Widow. Aaron was the only Junior entry and he did a great job.

  • AMA Precision
  1. First: Bill Logan — FE-2
  2. Second: Charlie Bauer — F-86

(Bill Logan also won FAI Scale with his Caproni.)

  • FAI Scale (F4B)
  1. First: Bill Logan — Caproni
  2. Second: Leonid Derbarmdiker — Yak-12M
  3. Third: Charlie Bauer — Skyraider

As always, the Nationals is a wonderful place to compete and to visit with old friends.
