Control Line: Speed

Newsletters
With the contest season almost finished, I finally have some time to gather my notes and write this month's column.
The first noteworthy piece of information is the excellent newsletter Flying Lines, edited by Mike Hazel and John Thompson. They are doing a fine job; the newsletter covers a broad spectrum of articles concerning Speed and control-line racing. Please send $6.00 for a year's subscription to:
- Flying Lines
- 1411 Bryant Ave., Cottage Grove, OR 97424
They need your support to make this newsletter a success.
I also received an excellent newsletter from New Zealand called SATRN. The editor is Mr. Des McAnelly:
- Des McAnelly
- 47 Norwood St., Invercargill, New Zealand
SATRN covers FAI Speed and regular Speed events and contains several interesting articles on what speed modelers are doing around the world.
Call for Contributions
It is difficult for me to understand why modelers will not take time to write. It only takes a few minutes to write a few lines. I would really appreciate hearing from you.
Speed Advisory Committee and Rules
I would like to express my appreciation to the Control Line Contest Board members for a favorable vote on the Speed proposals. As chairman of the Speed Advisory Committee, I invite any new Speed or safety proposals that would be beneficial to Speed. The Speed Advisory Committee is designed to act as an advisory agent to the CLCB regarding Speed-related items. If you modelers don't give me any feedback, this committee will suffer. So let's get on the stick and do some constructive work on better rules.
The new rules will be effective January 1, 1980. Check the "Competition News" section of Model Aviation for a breakdown of how the rules affect your event. Also, the pull-test has been increased for all Open Speed events to 48 g, except for 1/2 A which was raised to 32 g.
Engine Parts
There have been numerous requests about where to locate engine parts. I found a hobby shop that caters to speed and boat racing: Jim's Hobby Shop in Dallas. Jim Harris, the owner, stocks engine parts for OPS, K&B, and Tigre engines, RPM rods, and other items.
- Jim's Hobby Shop

1/2 A Engine Parts
Many modelers have written asking where to find blank Cox .049 cylinders. To make these available, I have ordered several dozen blank cylinders plus other Cox .049 engine parts. I also have the new case with chrome shaft set up. For more information, send a SASE to:
- P&G METAL SHOP, c/o Gene Hempel
- 301 North Yale Dr., Garland, TX 75042
Upcoming Columns
The next two Speed columns will cover how to rework an X-29 and utilize it with the tank system. Be sure to renew your subscription to Model Aviation.
Wish all you Speed fliers a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas.
