Rules change again

Reading over the rules proposals submitted for consideration, it appears another "zinger" has been submitted that would affect CL Speed events. The proposal was submitted under the General Rules umbrella as GEN-88-7 by Kevin Collins. It reads:

"To add an overall silencer code. Create a new Section 9, page 8, General: 'All model aircraft operated with one or more internal combustion engines larger than 0.051 cubic inches must be equipped with effective silencers. FAI events to be governed by FAI Sporting Code.' (Contest Board's jurisdiction.)"

It appears the RC fraternity is trying to legislate rules for Control Line modelers. Be sure to write your Control Line Contest Board representative with your input on this proposal.

NASS .21 Sport Speed rules (agreed at the '86 Nats meeting, North American Speed Society, Lake Charles, LA)

These are the rules agreed upon for .21 Sport Speed:

  1. Any .21–.35 cu. in. displacement engine.
  2. A mini-pipe open-exhaust system may be utilized. Mini-pipe cannot be longer than six center-line diameters from the cylinder bore edge; pipe inside diameter must be constant.
  3. Fuel formula: 10% nitro, 70% alcohol, 20% oil. Oil shall be a 50/50 mixture by volume of castor and synthetic oil to make the 20% oil fraction. Fuel will be furnished by contest management.
  4. No single-blade props allowed.
  5. No asymmetrical sidewinder-type models allowed.
  6. The engine must be mounted either upright or inverted.
  7. There can only be a one-inch differential between the lengths of the left and right wing. This dimension will be measured from the center line of the model.
  8. No profile models allowed.
  9. The Speed model can be designed with or without a metal speed pan.

10. A. The model must be flown on two .016-in. O.D. solid lines. B. The length of the two lines must be 60 ft. This distance will be measured from the center point of the grip position of the control handle to the center line of the model.

  1. The flying lines must be connected outside the wing tip of the model with scissor-type connectors 1/8 in. long, equivalent to Pylon brand #149 scissor connectors. The lead-outs on the airplane must be stainless steel braided cable equivalent to Pylon brand #146 stainless steel braided cable.
  2. The minimum distance between lead-outs will be no less than 1/2 in.
  3. The model will be timed for seven laps after the three laps have been completed in the pylon.
  4. The model with wires and flying handle must withstand a pull test of 40 Gs.

Please keep these rules available for future reference.

Drawings and photos

I hope everyone enjoyed the drawings of the Russian F2A Speed models in the January '87 issue. These are a first for Model Aviation as well as for the Speed column. If anyone wishes a copy from the originals, send $3 to Gene Hempel at the address listed below. Check the photos this month for more details concerning the installation of the fuel tanks.

Contributions

I need all the help you can contribute to this Speed column. I challenge any of you to mail something of interest to Model Aviation. If it pertains to Speed or related items, please mail them to me. I would appreciate your help — I am still waiting for those who previously offered help but have not followed up.
