Cumberland Flyers' New Home

By Marian Goodwin

Good News

If ever there was a truism, it's that a model flying club can't be very much without a flying field for its members. We're pleased to help the AMA-chartered Cumberland Flyers share their good news with the rest of the modeling community. A flying field is, indeed, a precious commodity. Do take care of the one you have, guys and gals everywhere, and be mindful of your neighbors.

GOOD NEWS! The Cumberland Flyers of Clarksville, TN, have found a home. All the credit goes to Tom Dillard and Rodney Goodwin. Tom is director of the Parks and Recreation Department, and Rodney is president of the Cumberland Flyers. The two men worked together for two years, and the final results are for all AMA members to enjoy.

The Field

What once was a go-cart track, brush, trees, dirt, and other things not conducive to model flying is now a 250 x 75 ft runway with a safety zone measuring 2,000 x 750 ft surrounding it.

The field was put in according to AMA specifications. Field rules and the Official AMA Safety Code have been posted at the flying site — the first things to put up at the Cumberland Flyers' new field. Suppose the next revision of the Parks & Recreation (P&R) logo will include a model airplane.

Overcoming Obstacles

The flying field did not happen without overcoming a few obstacles. It was a long time coming, but it was worth the wait.

  • First, the parks director had to get together with the Board of Directors to demonstrate that the flying field was needed.
  • Then the go-cart track had to be relocated, which was a substantial job.
  • City machinery for the work had to be obtained, and it could be used only when not needed elsewhere.
