Just as in the 1980s, when we made the dream of an AMA-owned facility a reality, we will be transforming that long-sought modelers' dream of a modeler-owned flying site into a reality. This month we show a conceptual rendering of the proposed 25,000 sq. ft. museum (large building on the left) and the site administrative offices (on the right), which will be built during Phase 2 of the development.

Plans are in process to host AMA technical seminars and symposiums and to conduct aeromodeling research at the new facility. This month we show the main building structure to be erected. The next issue of Model Aviation will provide sketches and concept drawings of the actual flying facilities. Watch the pages of this magazine and coming issues of the video "AMA Today" for continuing information on this project as it takes shape.

Proposed Muncie Museum and Facilities

  • 25,000 sq. ft. museum (main building)
  • Site administrative offices (Phase 2)
  • Planned uses: AMA technical seminars, symposiums, and aeromodeling research
  • Further illustrations and flying-facility concepts to appear in upcoming Model Aviation issues and "AMA Today" videos

Reston Headquarters: History and Current Status

This architectural rendering by AMA member Brad Powers was drawn in 1982 and was based upon the initial architectural drawings for the AMA property in Reston. AMA Headquarters escaped the high-rent district of its downtown Washington, D.C., rental offices by developing the Reston, Virginia, Headquarters in 1982. The entire project was made possible through contributions from AMA members and the hobby industry.

The recent photograph of the Reston Headquarters shows the dreams of 1982 made into reality. The 15,600 sq. ft. facility, located midpoint between Dulles Airport and downtown D.C., houses:

  • AMA headquarters staff
  • Conference room
  • Renaud Library
  • Museum collection

During the last nine years, the Museum collection has pushed Model Aviation magazine out of the building and into rented space; there are currently 600 models stored off site because they cannot fit into the facility.
