Scale World Championships
I received the following information from team manager Lloyd Roberts:
"I am team manager for the F4B/F4C United States Scale Team going to Poland next summer for the 2004 World Scale Model Championships in Control Line and Radio Control. The team has to raise an estimated $10,000–$15,000 to pay for transportation expenses beyond the small subsidy from the AMA.
"We are going to have a 'Mega Raffle' of gift certificates from the modeling industry ranging in value from $50–$500. We will be selling tickets at the Westchester Radio Aeromodelers (WRAM) and Toledo shows and at Top Gun. The drawing will be at Top Gun.
"Winners will have a choice of gift certificates. Tickets will be $5 or 3 for $10. All buyers will get a sticker that reads, 'I Sent the US Scale Team to Poland 2004.' $10 buyers will get a team lapel pin.
"Tickets can be purchased by mail from Lloyd Roberts, Team Manager, Box 271, West Rockport, ME 04865. Make your checks out to the US Scale Team Manager's Fund and send to the above address with telephone number and e-mail address.
"Contributions are welcome. If made out to the AMA F4B/F4C Team Fund, they will be fully tax deductible; raffle tickets are not tax deductible."
This information is not just for members of District I; all contributions will be appreciated.
Quinapoxet Model Flying Club — Spring Fun-Fly Report
The following report was received from Colin Towers.
A week before May 10 (spring fun-fly day), the forecast called for rain all day—all weekend actually. As the week progressed, updates showed promise, and the net result was that Saturday, May 10, was sunny and dry, although extremely windy.
As contest director (CD), I arrived at the field to set up at approximately 8:30 a.m. The first task was marking out the lines on the runway for the Landing Strip Poker event. It definitely takes a bit of effort to distribute 120 lbs. of pulverized limestone.
Soon more people began to appear. We had seven contestants, significantly fewer than most of us had expected.
We started with the first run of Landing Strip Poker. The event requires that you do five touch-and-goes in a three-minute period. In the wind that was blowing, this task was most challenging.
The next event was Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, where each contestant had to fly the same aerobatic routine twice in succession. The score was based on the time difference between the two runs.
Unbelievably, four contestants received a perfect score—zero time difference and no penalties. We had time for another run of Landing Strip Poker.
Placings:
- Dan Schmitz — first place
- Tom Loose — second place
- Al Vasquez — third place
- Colin Towers — tied fourth place
- Bill Johnson — tied fourth place
- Dan Nilsson — sixth place
- Paul DeBitetto — seventh place
Points of interest:
- On his first Mirror run, Paul put his airplane into a tree on landing approach. The aircraft was recovered and dried out, and Paul went on to fly the second run with the same airplane. Is that luck or what?
- Al decided to convert the landing gear on his Pizazz to retracts. The trouble was that there are no wheel wells on the airplane. You guessed it: the airplane touched here—and the wheels landed over there. Good thing he had a backup.
- Tom Loose flew the whole contest with a very light (remember, it was a windy day) three-channel airplane. Amazing.
- In all, the wind caused everyone a few problems, from tipping over on the runway to some very strange results on the touch-and-go events.
Hot dogs were cooked and served by Rene.
