Vintage Radio Control Society — Spirit of Selinsgrove Reunion

The Vintage Radio Control Society (VR/CS), a Special Interest Group of the AMA, hosted its annual Spirit of Selinsgrove reunion during the Labor Day weekend at Sayre, Pennsylvania. The weather was nearly perfect (maybe a bit breezy), but that did not discourage the more than 50 fliers who participated, with nearly 100 vintage radio control airplanes.

The three-day affair featured relaxed open flying and Vintage AMA Pattern events, offering something for everyone. Wives were treated to a Saturday afternoon shopping tour hosted by the executive council members’ wives, and Saturday night included the annual reunion dinner enjoyed by all.

#### Vintage AMA Pattern Results Vintage AMA Pattern consisted of:

  • Class I (in honor of Jack Port) — rudder and optional motor control
  • Class II (in honor of Howard McEntee) — rudder, elevator, motor control
  • Class III (in honor of Ralph Brooke) — rudder, elevator, aileron, and motor control

Winners:

  • Class I: 1st Bob Noll (Royal Rudderbug), 2nd John Haffner (Sterling Rudderbird)
  • Class II: 1st Dick Allen (Start Shark), 2nd Scott Wallace (Aristo Cat), 3rd Bob Noll (deBolt Champ)
  • Class III: 1st Charlie Chomos (Kaos)

#### Aircraft Awards All fliers participated in selecting:

  • Best of Pioneer (aircraft designed prior to January 1, 1950): Charlie Chomos (Rudderbug)
  • Best Vintage (January 1, 1950 to January 1, 1966): Bob Gardner (Pegasus)
  • Best of Nostalgia (January 1, 1966 to January 1, 1970): Scott Wallace (Sun Fli IV)

Charlie Chomos with the Rudderbug also won the Spirit of Vintage. Spot landing was hotly contested between Bob Noll and Frank Granelli, with Frank winning.

The Technical Achievement Award, commemorating the life and contributions of the late Walter Good, went to Charlie Chomos for flying his Rudderbug on single channel and escapements.

Each year, the Spirit of Selinsgrove award is given to the person who has contributed through dedication, hard work, and love of vintage aircraft, and who has done the most to keep VR/CS alive, vibrant, and growing. This year the award went to Bob Noll, VR/CS president, for continuing the tradition established by the founders and bringing new energy and vitality to VR/CS.

#### VR/CS Membership VR/CS membership is $20, which includes a subscription to The Vintage Flier. Send your application and $20 to:

  • Glenn Flynn, Membership Chairman
  • 99 Rob Roy Rd., Bradford, PA 16701

It will be the best $20 you will spend this year.

Black Sheep Squadron — Northeast Pennsylvania

The Black Sheep Squadron of Northeast Pennsylvania has been busy with very positive activities. Their recent fun-fly provided a donation to Valley Santa of Wyoming Valley, an organization that provides for needy children at Christmas. The event was held at Fox Crossing Airport in Falls, Pennsylvania.

The club also held mall shows at the Wyoming Valley and Viewmont malls in the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area. The daylong events featured an extensive display of model aircraft, model aviation literature, and video demonstrations.

Steve Kurimchak provided the information and photographs of the club activity. Additional information can be found on the club’s web site:
