FAI World Champion
We have a Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Champion within District III. Bob Sifleet of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, won the F1E Free Flight (FF) World Championship in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Bob is a member of the Model Aviation Hall of Fame and is well known in the top echelon of the free-flight community. The F1E event is one of the most complex: models must be adjusted to fly both in standing waves on hillsides and in straight-ahead thermal conditions; adjustable ballast is used to handle varying parameters. A win in this category clearly illustrates the competitor’s deep knowledge of flight. Congratulations to Bob!
Publicity
Positive publicity is essential for every club. The Reading Eagle published an informative article about the Flying Dutchmen Aeromodelers and their various flying activities, presenting modelers in an instructive way to thousands of readers. Publicity like this is exactly what aeromodeling needs. Consider offering information or a news release to your local newspaper.
Wyoming Valley RC Flyers — Make-A-Wish Partnership
Associate Vice President Matt Turowski provided information about the Wyoming Valley RC Flyers (Wyoming, PA) and the club’s long-standing support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast Pennsylvania. This year’s activities included an Antique and Classic Car Show and a flyover by a full-scale Stinson V-77. The main attraction was a full-scale Black Hawk helicopter from the Army National Guard.
Members of West End Wings, Tuscarora RC Club, Abington RC Sport Flyers, Black Sheep Squadron, and the Cocalico Prop Busters put on a successful radio-control airshow. Three television stations and two local papers covered the event. Proceeds of more than $4,000 were donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, helping to make wishes come true. Thanks to Mike Losh for the information and pictures. For more information, see the club’s website: www.wyomingvalleyrcflyers.com.
Local Partnerships
Colonel Fred “Buddy” Boone of Washington, Pennsylvania, enjoys a partnership with the local Texas Roadhouse, where the restaurant displays and sponsors his flying Midwest Extra 300s.
Maynard Hill’s Transatlantic Model Flight
You may have read about Maynard Hill’s crossing of the Atlantic with a model airplane. My wife and I attended a celebration of that success, where Maynard spoke about his modeling career. For the Pennsylvania portion of District III, we can be proud he is a Penn State graduate. Maynard’s early employment was with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. The modelers of District III offer congratulations to the crew of the Society for Technical Aeromodel Research.
