November 2006 165
ON SUNDAY, March 5, 2006, another big
indoor flying event was held at the National
Building Museum in Washington, D.C. from
11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Modelers from Richmond, Virginia, to
Baltimore, Maryland, gather there three to
four times a year. They fly FF and indoor
RC models for fun at the invitation of the
museum staff. There seemed to be more
spectators during this fly-in than normal.
Roughly 50 modelers are typically
present to enjoy flying in this spectacular
setting which is open and free to the public.
The building has two large areas inside, each
approximately the size of an 81-foot cube.
Free flighters use one and the RC fliers use
the other. The DC Maxecuters Club hosts
the event on behalf of all AMA members.
I was invited to come and participate and
I thoroughly enjoyed it. You would not
believe the small size of the airplanes.
District IV AMA members may wish to
take advantage of a special offer made to
them by RC Micro World (produced by
John Worth of Fairfax, Virginia). For only
$10, less than half the normal price, John
will provide a 2006 subscription to his
monthly online magazine featuring what’s
happening in the world of the smallest and
lightest of RC models. These models range
from less than 1 gram to roughly 3 ounces
total weight.
If you’re interested and have access to
the Internet, go to www.cloud9rc.com and
click on “Trial” to see a typical monthly
issue free. You may click on “Subscribe” to
see the options available.
This shows the left side of the National
Building Museum.
The inside of the museum is spacious.
Tony Pavel shows off his Penny Planes.
Chuck Duncan shows off his B.E.2a.
RC Micro World’s John Worth with his Aero
Ace.
Don Scrull (L) flies while John Worth observes.
Even the little ones enjoyed the flying.
Until next time, take a kid flying.
