Newport News Park R.C. Club — Founder's Day (September 15, 2002)
The Newport News Park R.C. Club held its Founder’s Day event on September 15, 2002, postponed from May because of weather. The Newport News Parks and Recreation Commission provided the facility for the club.
As seen in the photos, club vice president Joe Lupton and Bill Hamby, International Model Aircraft Association District IV Assistant Director, were discussing the model that would be on display at the Tournament of Champions (TOC) in Nevada. Club president Jay Jennings supervised the festivities.
The public was invited and treated to good food and flying demonstrations throughout the day. Many people were introduced to the hobby via the buddy-box system; children and adults enjoyed their first radio-control flights. Other demonstrations included aerobatic flying and ducted-fan flights by Joe Lupton. It was a fun day, and participation in the city and club celebration was appreciated.
This club is family-oriented, with members from the local area and representatives from at least three military services. They also serve youth by working with Newport News schools and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.
Prince George's RC Club — 11th Annual Open House Fly-In (October 5, 2002)
The Prince George's RC Club in Maryland held its 11th Annual Open House Fly-In on October 5, 2002. The event also celebrated the renewal of the field lease for several more years.
The public and city officials were invited to attend. Along with good food, attendees enjoyed flying demonstrations. Many newcomers to radio control (RC) flying were given a chance to try their skills via the buddy-box system; club president Rick Moreland instructed the new pilots while announcer Dell Warren kept the crowd informed.
The club has an excellent site, large enough for Pylon Racing, and they hold several Pylon events each year.
Brasstown Flyers — Note from Mary Payne
Mary Payne, secretary and treasurer of the Brasstown Flyers, sent this note and photo:
"Bob Horne, Murphy, NC, is standing at the Brasstown, NC airfield, holding a 40% larger replica of the Sig Kadet Lt-40 aircraft. (The Sig Lt-40 is considered the best-flying aircraft of its type.)
How big is it? Well, Bob stands 6-foot-3 and is a skilled aircraft builder and member of the Brasstown Flyers Radio Control Club. This monster airplane proved to be an excellent flying machine and was seen flying at the annual fun fly/swap meet in Brasstown on Saturday, September 21, 2002. The public was welcome."
Notes and Closing
I would appreciate pictures and information from the clubs in District IV for column publication. If you have not seen anything about your club, perhaps you have not sent material. For clubs that have submitted photos and event information but have not yet been printed, your submissions should appear shortly — thank you.
The election is over, and I thank all who voted. I appreciate your input.
I hope everyone had a safe and merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Until next time, take a kid flying.
As always, take a kid flying.
