Tidewater Radio Control — All-Electric Fun Fly (report by Bob Tabler)
Bob Tabler, vice president of Tidewater Radio Control, Inc., sent the following report about the club’s Electric Fun-Fly at Fentress NALF (Naval Auxiliary Landing Field) in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The second annual Tidewater Radio Control All-Electric Fun Fly was held June 22 and 23 at the Fentress Naval Base in Chesapeake, Virginia.
With pilots ranging in age from a talented and aggressive eight-year-old to veterans of radio-control (RC) modeling, the open flying and fun events were continually busy. Electric-model pilots from four states attended and, in excellent weather, flew aircraft that ranged from park flyers to a 10-foot scale Cub. An electric helicopter appeared and gave excellent, crowd-pleasing performances.
The Fun Fly Survivor Competition, including such events as the Snake, Ladder of Doom, the Suburban Swing, and the Sky Rocket, was well received by the pilots. There were a few non-lethal crashes, but the fun factor was enjoyed by pilots and spectators alike.
The electric-powered models included a beautiful four-motor model, 1/4-scale Old-Timer models, helicopters, and park flyers. One pilot flying a biwing park flyer in a breeze made a three-minute flight that ascended and descended with zero feet of headway — what a talented pilot!
Each day featured hourly drawings of prize bags containing various electronic model supplies and manufacturer discounts. The prizes were donated by more than 20 sponsors and proved to be a favorite.
Thanks to all the contestants, the Navy, the event staff, and, last but not least, the weatherman for an enjoyable and successful event.
