District V Report - 2008/04

In January I attended the AMA Convention in Ontario, California. The event is growing, and attendance and interest were up again this year.

While at the convention, I met with many District V members. I am looking forward to seeing more members at the annual Southeastern Modelers Show in Perry, Georgia, in a few weeks!

Event reports

Associate Vice President Bob Dixon offered a couple of event reports.

Flint Flyers Fly-In

The Flint Flyers Fly-In was held November 10, 2007, at the Georgia State Veterans Park outside of Cordele, Georgia. This is a nice flying site and the park area is one of the best-kept secrets in middle Georgia.

The site features:

  • A large RC runway
  • Direct access to Lake Blackshear
  • A beautifully groomed golf course
  • A camping ground
  • A small museum of vintage aircraft

At this park you can fish, golf, camp, and fly RC all in the same weekend. The Flint Flyers are very active; their current president is Jerry Johnson, who has been modeling for more than 25 years. The club welcomes visitors and runs a nice fly-in.

Warbirds Over Fort Valley

Warbirds Over Fort Valley, Georgia, was cosponsored by the Georgia Aircraft Modelers Association (GAMA) and the Giant Scale Warbirds Association on December 14–15, 2007. The weather turned the tables on us for this show, especially on Saturday when the sky opened up.

Pilots arrived on Friday for this two-day event scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Friday was pretty nice, but by 11:30 on Saturday everyone had to pack it up and go home because the rain wouldn't stop. Mac Hodges couldn't even get the B-29 put together for the Saturday show.

Regardless, there was a nice turnout and the GAMA field was in excellent shape with registration and impound areas set up. Another great job by GAMA members. I was only able to catch a few airplanes through my lens on Saturday morning, but they were impressive. I am looking forward to this year's event, scheduled November 7–8, 2008.
