District VII Report

Iowa / Michigan / Minnesota / Wisconsin

Byline

Bill Oberdieck Vice President

Greetings

This column appears in the January edition of Model Aviation. Another year has passed and we are starting a new one. I want to wish a happy, healthy, and safe New Year to you and yours.

I also want to thank all the clubs that send me your newsletters and information for this column. It is helpful and much appreciated.

District Web Resources

The District VII web page is at:

You can also access the site through the AMA web page:

The site is available for all district clubs to post information, schedules, photos, etc. It appears that clubs often do not post a calendar of events, which would help with planning. We want to have a calendar on the District VII site, but we need event information to put in it!

An account is set up at:

This is for use by District VII members only. As of this writing, there does not appear to be enough interest to keep it active. The discussion group site is still live but sees little or no use.

Communication

The intent of these resources is to encourage communication and to keep the door open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Club Events

The Detroit Aero Modelers (DAMs) held their annual Big Bird fly-in at the club’s field in Rouge Park, Detroit. The weather was just perfect, with plenty of airplanes, pilots, and spectators.

I don’t think I have ever witnessed such dedication to any hobby or sport as what I saw at the DAMs fly-in. In fact, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who can top this one!

The former Kate Engle took time between her wedding ceremony and reception to make a flight as the newly married Mrs. Mahon. Congratulations, Kate, to you and your husband. May you both enjoy a long and happy marriage.

I also attended the annual Pilgrims Big Bird fly-in. This event has always drawn a large number of pilots and a wide array of aircraft, including warbirds, aerobatics, and sport types.

Looking Ahead

By now most of you have already started on projects for the new year. Maybe you’ve even completed some neglected repairs. Remember, it is not too early to think spring!

See you at the field. Until then, get involved! Introduce a youngster to our hobby, and remember, safety is no accident.
