Harbor Soaring Society — Adopt-A-School Program
Submitted by Fred Hesse, Huntington Beach, CA
The Harbor Soaring Society (HSS) of Costa Mesa, California, currently teaches model aviation classes at the Boys & Girls Club and at several local schools in Huntington Valley. Based on Bob Hunt’s article in the January 2003 issue of Model Aviation, the HSS Adopt-A-School Program has been upgraded to focus on radio control (RC) aircraft.
The program follows a four-step progression:
- Ground school — four hours of classroom instruction. Each student receives a free AMA membership.
- Flight simulator training — several hours on the Great Planes RealFlight R/C Simulator.
- Flight school — hands-on instruction using gliders and small electric-powered trainer airplanes donated by Hobby People and club members; students receive sufficient instruction to comfortably solo.
- Aircraft building — an assembly class for students who want their own RC airplane, plus kit-building with encouragement and training to modify or design an original aircraft.
The first two steps are provided at no cost to the students. Classes cover aircraft, radio, and ground-support equipment. The Costa Mesa Daily Pilot featured the club and flying field and ran a photo of Jake Wirtz from Talbert Middle School.
Hemet Model Masters — Memorial Jay "Madman" Yates Semiscale Rally
By Associate Vice President Jerry Neuberger
The Hemet Model Masters held the first Memorial Jay "Madman" Yates Semiscale Rally at Domenigoni Field on September 20–21, 2003, in Hemet, California. Contest director Rick Waterman and his assistant Larry Metz, along with many club members, conducted a first-class event that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The Jay Yates Semiscale Rally is open to any airplane scaled after a full-scale aircraft. Scale fidelity is not a strict requirement, but the majority of the airplanes were nicely executed, and there were a few "squint scale" entries. Watching the B-19 and B-24 fly in formation was impressive.
A highlight of the rally was when Charlie Mackey flew Jay's Burt Rutan–designed Quickie; I was honored when Charlie offered me the sticks.
Madman Yates is sorely missed by the Model Masters, and the Semiscale Rally is a fitting tribute to his memory. I can't wait until next year.
Till next time... Keep 'em safe and keep 'em fly'n.
