Well, it is that time of the month again — the due date for my column in Model Aviation. It has been almost three years since I started writing this column, and I now have firsthand knowledge of how newsletter editors feel.

Toledo Weak Signals RC Expo — Donations

I just returned from the 46th annual Toledo Weak Signals RC Expo, April 9–11, where the Academy received two generous donations from the Radio Control Hobby Trade Association (RCHTA):

  • $37,500 as the second payment of a $75,000 grant that will be used for AMA's education program
  • $10,000 in support of the third annual Model Hobby Grand Event

AMA appreciates RCHTA's efforts in promoting the Radio Control hobby and continued support of the Academy.

Executive Council

By the time you read this column, the April Executive Council meeting will be finished and the motions may be in this issue. For new members, or members who may have forgotten, the Executive Council meets four times each year. Prior to the meetings an agenda with supporting material is prepared and posted on AMA's website, and each Associate Vice President receives a copy.

The Executive Council encourages members to review the issues, ask questions, and make recommendations. A complete copy of the approved minutes of any quarterly Executive Council meeting is available to AMA members upon request.

Elections

It is time to nominate officials for:

  1. Executive Vice President
  2. Vice President in District III
  3. Vice President in District VII
  4. Vice President in District XI

Remember that the incumbent needs to be nominated just as any other candidate does. For more details, see the May 1999 issue of Model Aviation, page 143.

If you have an interest in being part of the big picture, read the qualifications and decide if you have the time, ability, and desire to hold one of these positions.

New AMA Headquarters

The first meeting regarding the new AMA Headquarters building took place on March 27. Several possible sites were selected, and a Request for Proposal (RFP) was prepared and mailed to 11 architects in the area. The next steps are:

  • Review architect proposals
  • Make a selection on June 5

The target date for completion of the new building is summer 2001. I will keep you informed as progress is made. If you have any suggestions or questions concerning this project, please feel free to contact me at AMA Headquarters.

Nationals — Site Improvements

It is anticipated that, by the time of the Nationals:

  • The water line installation throughout the site will be complete
  • The two gravel roads will be paved
  • New and upgraded electrical service will be in place

Of course, this is only if Mother Nature cooperates!

Meanwhile, the grass looks greener every day. If you have not requested your Nats entry form, you should do so now.

Model Hobby Grand Event

Plans for the third annual Model Hobby Grand Event are well underway. We are hoping for an even better event this year than last. I am looking forward to seeing old friends and hope to meet new ones! If you have not attended the Grand Event before, make plans to do so this year. The dates are June 12–13.

An open membership meeting will be held Saturday, followed by a cookout free to AMA members and their families.

Happy flying,
