I want to express my appreciation to everyone who helped make this year's Nationals a success.
A recent issue of Model Aviation contained information about an exciting exhibition, On Miniature Wings, that will be traveling around the country beginning in October of this year. Drawn from its extensive collection, the Smithsonian Institution's Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) will display about 25 models in museums around the country. Though many are not flying models, this is an excellent opportunity to share the world of aeromodeling with the public.
The Academy is pleased to be working in conjunction with the Smithsonian by presenting programs for teachers, students, and the general public during the display's stops over the next two-and-a-half years. Working through its 2,500 chartered clubs, AMA will be able to reach many thousands of individuals through these programs.
Listed below is the tentative schedule for the tour. If your club's area is listed, you may wish to contact the AMA to see how you can be a part of the program. If On Miniature Wings is not scheduled near you, you may contact a local museum or SITES to inquire about bringing it to your area. Please note that the Smithsonian requires a high security level for this exhibit, and a contract involving a fee will be required.
The Nationals are finished for another year. We had decent weather, and everyone was impressed with the improvements to the site from last year—especially the paving of the two gravel roads throughout the property. I want to express my appreciation to the AMA Headquarters staff members who are deeply involved in the Nats, as well as all of the Special Interest Groups and their volunteers. Without them we would not have a Nats, no matter how nice the site looks.
Special thanks go to Ron Morgan, Wayne Yeager, Brenda Schuette, and Al Williams for all the assistance they gave in making this a successful Nats. Ron and his wife Jane spent the entire length of the Nats in Muncie—that is a long time to be away from home.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the contestants for attending, having a great time, and hopefully going home winners.
Update on the New Facility
On August 7 the new building committee met with the architect to review a building design for the new administration building. The design was well received by the committee members present, with some modifications. When final approval is given, I plan to publish the picture in my column. I find this to be a very exciting project. It is anticipated that ground-breaking will be in March 2000, with a completion date of March 2001.
Happy flying,
Joyce Hager Executive Director jhager@modelaircraft.org
