Turbine Waivers
Any member applying for a turbine waiver needs to submit the following items to the AMA Special Services Department:
- Ground School Certification signed by an authorized instructor for the particular engine
- Pilot’s Questionnaire
- Contest Director Certification
You can find all turbine documents on the AMA Web site (www.modelaircraft.org), or contact the Special Services Department.
Please note:
- Two copies of the Contest Director Certification are required, signed by different Contest Directors. You cannot sign your own Certification.
- Depending on the engine(s) for which you are certified, your turbine waiver can state that you are certified to operate any turbine engine with an auto-start feature, as listed on the AMA Turbine Engine list.
The term “auto-start feature” means there is a nonmanual sequencing of spin up/ignition/fuel admission with a safety shutdown provision.
There are currently three groups of turbines considered manual start:
- JPX/T240/250/260
- Sophia/J450/Sophia FET
- Golden West/FD3/67/Golden West ECU and GCU
The integrated speed-control sensors in the Golden West JetCat P-80 and P-120 are acceptable speed limiters as required in the Safety Regulations for Model Aircraft Gas Turbines, as amended by the Executive Council on April 1, 2000.
Contact Ilona Maine at the Special Services Department with any concerns or questions: (765) 287-1256, extension 251.

Additional Camp Jeep™ 2000 Information
Camp Jeep™ 2000 was covered in the January 2001 issue of Model Aviation. The Camp Jeep™ Flight School was a huge public relations success for model aviation and would not have been possible without the cooperation of AMA clubs, AMA District IV officers, and the coordination of AMA Contest Director Darrell Watts with the Jeep Division at Daimler-Chrysler US Headquarters, where he is employed.
After the Model Aviation article was published, we learned more about the depth of involvement and the equally critical role played by the Skymasters RC Club of Michigan. For the event, Skymasters club members built 24 airplanes — 16 for flying and eight for the building display, photo station, and classroom. Three days prior to the event, six Skymasters pilots and four of their wives drove down with all the equipment in vans and the Skymasters club trailer. They set up displays, assembled and test-flew all the trainers, and worked in many different areas (the wives even brought lunch each day from the dining tent for all the workers) during the event.
This event’s success was dependent on the cooperation of all the clubs. We want the Skymasters and all involved to know how much their effort was appreciated.
