Focal Point

Fairchild

Bruce Harlow (3462 McManamy Rd., Ellensburg, WA 98926) built this "little-known airplane of the 1930s," a Fairchild Super 71, from Gene Falda plans. The model was completed and flown for the first time in the summer of 1998. The full-scale version "was used to carry mining equipment in Canada," says Harlow. As for the model, "it flies great!"

  • Engine: G-62
  • Prop: 22 x 10

Scratch-Built Jet

Bob Holmes (Box 1002, Charleston, IL 61920) of the Charleston Stone Flyers Club designed this Mach 1 ducted-fan jet. The fuselage is balsa; the wings have foam cores. Power is an O.S. .91 VR-DF and it uses a Dynamax fan. The model has flaps and retracts and uses a Futaba 8UAF radio.

  • Span: 64 inches
  • Length: 78 inches
  • Weight: approximately 17 pounds
  • Engine: O.S. .91 VR-DF
  • Fan: Dynamax

Sommer Monoplane

George Pedersen (25 Hampton Ave., Mastic, NY 11950) built this 18-pound model from Wally Zober plans. Finish is Super Coverite and polyurethane with stain mixed in. The model has full flying-wire controls and is powered by a U.S. .41, turning an 18 x 12 prop. "It flies just like a Cub," says the builder.

Fooled 'Em

Theresa Gentele sent this photo of her father's Top Flite Cessna 182 (Jack Acker, 1388 Buck Mt. Rd., Weatherly, PA 18255). "The irony is not only the amount of hours spent on building and finishing, but how many people were fooled (thinking it was a full-scale aircraft) by looking at the pictures," she wrote.

Correction

Carl Mohs photographed the Gipsy Moth shown in the April "Focal Point."

Jungmeister

Dave Schwarzen (3003 Carron Rd., Festus, MO 63028) of the Twin City Flyers club shows his plan-built 1/6-scale Bücker Bu 133 Jungmeister. "It was built with the help of information I found on the Internet and a set of Floyd Manly plans that I modified for scale construction," he wrote. The model weighs approximately seven pounds and is finished with Super Coverite and LustreKote paint. Power is a SuperTigre .75, hidden under an IMP dummy radial.

  • Engine: SuperTigre .75 (hidden under IMP dummy radial)
  • Finish: Super Coverite and LustreKote

Two Wings Better Than One?

Stanley Dusczak (32 Heritage Ct., Cheektowaga, NY 14225) thinks so; that's why he built this Boeing F4B-2 from Model Aviation plans. Weight is 12 pounds; power is an ASP 1.08. "It flies very well, and is impressive on a slow flyby," wrote Stanley. His wife made the pilot figure, and "the hold-downs at the stab are a must and a rule at our flying field."

  • Plan: #750 (original article by John Tanzer, January 1994)
  • Weight: 12 pounds
  • Engine: ASP 1.08

Flying Clown

Ara Dedekian (334B Pleasant St., Belmont, MA 02478) built this from a J&J Sales kit. The CL stunt and racing design is "based on the old PDQ Company kits," says Dedekian. Finish is water-based urethane with MonoKote trim and a coat of K&B clear epoxy. Power is a Cox .15 converted to diesel with a Davis Diesel head.

Restoration Project

Kirby Crawford (1967 Country Air Dr., Rice Lake, WI 54868) restored this model in 1997 from a D-1K originally built in 1981 by Bob Crosby. Plans were drawn by Crawford in 1980, based on Peter Westburg drawings. Power plant is a U.S. Engines 35cc, turning an 18 x 6 prop. Williams Bros. cylinders were used on the cowl.

  • Span: 90 inches
  • Weight: 22 pounds
  • Engine: U.S. Engines 35cc
