I have a couple of important issues to cover this month, so there's no actual column this go-around.
First up is a Control Line Safety Rules Change Proposal.
The nature of safety proposals is such that they may be put in place immediately if the AMA president, Contest Board coordinator, and appropriate Contest Board chairperson agree that it should be. That has been done in this case, so the proposal is now in effect. However, for the proposal to stay in effect it must be ratified by the full Contest Board four weeks after publication in Model Aviation. This is where we currently are in the process. If you have any concerns about this proposal, please contact your District Control Line Contest Board member as soon as possible.
Safety Rules Change Proposal

A brief summary of the proposed change: for Mouse II, Event 314, change line length from 42 feet to 47 feet 6 inches. Use FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) outer pilot circle of 9' 10" instead of AMA 15-foot circle.
Exact wording for rule book:
- Page 42, paragraph 7.2: change "A circle of 15 foot radius from the center point ..." to "A circle of 9' 10\" ..."
- Change line length (in chart) from "42'" to "47' 6\"."
- Page 45, paragraph 4.1: change " ... 75 laps (Class II) ... " to " ... 70 laps (Class II) ... "
- Page 45, paragraph 4.2: change " ... 200 laps (Class II) ... " to " ... 140 laps (Class II) ... "
The logic behind this proposal is that new engines are allowing Mouse II to obtain speeds exceeding 100 mph. The existing line length and large pilot circle make it hard to get back to the center of the circle before the airplane gets around to the other side of the circle. This is an unsafe condition, as lines can (and have) wrapped up the other two pilots.
The second item this month is the publication of the 2001 Scale Aerobatics sequences. These schedules are also available from AMA Headquarters upon request.
