Focus on Competition

Notes from a former Technical Director

You've become familiar with a certain picture at the head of this column over the last eight years — now it's gone. As you know from recent announcements, the photo has moved to the top of the Executive Director's column. A certain sadness fills my soul in that regard, since I really came to love the job of heading up what I lovingly referred to as the "Competitions Department." As tasks mounted over the years, I loved wondering what the next call or letter would address.

I tried to approach each task with the idea of being an ombudsman — attempting to act as a contact between the membership and the Executive Council. It is pleasing to know that many of the concerns we passed along to our board of directors were well received and implemented. Some weren't — but then maybe they shouldn't have been.

The division of tasks at Headquarters now reveals a slightly different split. One of the first decisions made was to place the Technical Director in charge of the Competitions Department. Please understand that while titles may change, many (but not all) of the tasks I performed will continue in that arena.

We were fortunate that two members of the Competitions/Technical staff moved to Muncie: JoAnne Spampinato and Chip Smith. They brought with them valuable association memory. The three of us shared responsibilities, workload, and office space. As a result, whatever skills or information I personally may possess were shared with them daily. It's comforting to know that as we move forward, whatever value I might have had operating as a staff member is still in place. In like manner, we can now anticipate new ideas and direction.

Please be assured that Chip is very knowledgeable concerning competition matters and technical concerns. JoAnne is what the theatrical world would consider a quick study. She has tremendous insights into the workings of this organization and is able to absorb significant workloads. I know you will find working with them — and the three new staff members in that department — a wonderful experience.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed working in the Technical Director capacity. The response from each of you made the tasks pleasant and rewarding. As Executive Director, I hope I can continue to work with you and on your behalf in the same manner.

Introducing Chip Smith — Competitions Director

During the past 10 years it has been my pleasure to meet many of you. With an association that has now grown to almost 180,000 members, there are still thousands I have yet to meet.

A little background: I began my career with AMA 10 years ago as the assistant editor of Model Aviation. I progressed from there to Nationals General Manager, and now I am the new Competitions Director. It has been quite an education, and I wouldn't trade the past 10 years for any in my working career.

It's not news to our regular readers that AMA is undergoing a period of growth and change. It's also not news that clichés such as "growing pains" spring from basic truths common to us all. With that in mind, this column is dedicated to providing you with information to help you deal with the inevitable difficulties associated with a transition. In other words, we'd like to help make it easier for you to do business with the Competitions Department.

The first and most personal change you're apt to come across is the change in people who work for you in the Competitions Department. Over the years many of you have developed working relationships with Micheline Madison, Debbie Brown, Penny Hudson, or others who are no longer with AMA. With the departure of those familiar faces (or, in many cases, voices on the phone) we've found it necessary to reassign the workload.

This column went to press too quickly for us to include photographs introducing the staff of your new Competitions Department. We hope to do that in the very near future. For now, here are the names of the new people, their responsibilities, and phone extensions.

  • Chip Smith — Competitions Director and Technical Director. In charge of national (Nats) and international (FAI) events as well as technical matters. If you need to reach him directly: (317) 287-1256, ext. 230.
  • JoAnne Spampinato — Administrative Assistant and Chip's right hand. With AMA for seven years and familiar with model competition, having spent three years as Bob Underwood's assistant. Responsibilities: AMA Contest Board and rules changes, FAI rules changes, sanctioning duties, and assisting with FAI events (team funding and travel arrangements). Contact: ext. 231.
  • Tina Pool — Sanctioning (mail requests). Contact: ext. 233.
  • Sarah Pryor — Sanctioning (mail requests). Former sanction secretary in Boston; now working under Tina and JoAnne. Contact: ext. 234.
  • Kim Knight — Competitions Secretary. Works on National and FAI records, assists Contest Directors, and administers AMA's Large Aircraft Inspector program. Contact: ext. 235.

We're here to make your model competing fun, exciting, and — hopefully — smooth. Each of us is performing new tasks, and we ask for your patience as we get accustomed to the myriad of details involved in all competition matters. To those of you who have already helped us — and there have been many — you have my profound thanks. If you have questions or suggestions, please give us a call or drop us a line. Your feedback will ensure we can continue to improve our services to you.
