Focus on Competition
Competitions Director — Chip Smith
The February issue contained a table titled "Competition Directory" (page 166). In that table are the names and addresses of the people who volunteer their time to form the infrastructure of organized model competition here in the U.S. We'll get more into what they do later; I want to talk first about one position in particular.
One of the most important jobs listed in that table is the position of Contest Board Coordinator. Back when the table was composed the coordinator position was vacant, due to the sad demise of Don Lindley. Since then, that position has been filled. I am pleased to announce that Cliff Telford of Winter Springs, Florida, has been appointed the new Contest Board Coordinator. I don't think anyone could possibly have picked a better person for the position.
Many of you know Cliff from his years in the hobby. He's served two terms as District IV Vice President, was the Control Line Contest Board chairman, an RC Contest Board member, FAI Pylon subcommittee chairman, and he's been awarded two Distinguished Service awards.
Cliff has also been on the AMA Scholarship Committee for 25 years and was a pilot for Eastern Airlines for 32 years, logging 23,000 hours as captain. Quite a list of credentials, and that's a good thing, because Cliff has a lot ahead of him.
Consider what's involved: there are 10 contest boards with 104 members whose task it is to guide the development of rules and procedures governing every aspect of aeromodeling competition in the U.S. It is the Contest Board Coordinator who must tie all that into a cohesive package. It takes someone with a varied modeling background and a lot of firsthand experience in competition organization. We're fortunate that Cliff is willing to donate his time and energy to fill this very important position.
In case you are someone who looks at the Competition Directory and wonders, "who are these people?" let me sketch out the big picture regarding competition.
There really are three groups listed in the directory: Contest Coordinators, Contest Boards, and FAI Team Selection Committee chairmen. The Contest Coordinators and Contest Board members are responsible for contest modeling activities here in the U.S.; the FAI committee is responsible for international competition.
All AMA-sanctioned contests must first go through their district's Contest Coordinator for approval. Sanctioning does two things: it ensures that there will not be another contest held near yours on the same date, and it gets your contest listed in the "Contest Calendar" section of this magazine. If your club is looking to hold an event, your Contest Coordinator will need to start the process with the person listed for your district.
It is the responsibility of the various contest boards to compile the rules for their events. It is through these boards that you have a voice regarding changes to the rule book. Contest Board chairmen are responsible for seeing that their board members see and vote on each of the rules proposals. The chairmen and board members then compile the results into what will become the final wording of the rule. In turn it will be Mr. Telford's job to see that it all comes together to form the AMA Competition Regulations.
The FAI Team Selection Committee rounds out the Competition Directory. It is this group's responsibility to oversee the process and contests used to pick the team who will represent the U.S. in international competition.
Additional information and procedures can be found in the front of the AMA Membership Manual, the FAI Sporting Code, and the AMA Competition Regulations. If you haven't already received your Membership Manual (it's in the package with the stickers), you will soon. We say it every year, and it bears repeating: please read through your Membership Manual. It contains lots of valuable information, not the least of which is an explanation of how the Academy works.
This year it was decided that every AMA member could request a rule book free of charge. To get your copy, return the form that came attached to your membership card. If you've already tossed the form out, you can drop us a postcard or call us with your AMA number and we'll get your copy on its way. Free rule books are limited to one per member.
FCC News
As this goes to press there is really nothing new to report. The FCC has said it hopes to be finished with its changes to NPRM 92-235 sometime in February. We'll have to hold on until then to see exactly where things stand. In the meantime, it's a new year, and that's always a good time to try an unexplored avenue of modeling.
